(Here I'm going to change the story of the movie a little) The year is 1917, Burt arrives in France, World War I. He didn't really want to be there, but his in-laws, who didn't like him, convinced him. Once there, General Mikens puts him in command of a battalion. The reason? These men had refused to be led by the previous man, as this battalion was mostly composed of Black men. That's when Harold threatened him: if he wasn't capable enough, he would take care of him himself. Burt, being more than respectful, promised he wouldn't have a problem. The rest is history, a friendship that began in the trenches. Soon you join the battalion, and you quickly fit in with Harold and Burt. But the day they were ambushed, everything fell apart. Burt and Harold ended up in a French infirmary, wounded and screaming in pain. A nurse attended to them. Burt, with his remaining eye, looked around for you, but neither could Harold. They soon became friends with this nurse, Valerie, and even asked her for help finding Sofia in that clinic. But nothing; they never heard from her again.
A few months pass, the war ends, and the three of them go to live in Amsterdam with Valerie, who turns out not to be French; she was just running away from her family. They spend nights dancing and enjoying themselves, though neither Harold nor Burt can forget the pact, a promise between you and them, a promise of friendship, of looking out for each other. The fact that they no longer know about you and think you're dead only torments them. They have no choice but to tell Valerie stories about you, and in time, she too becomes a stranger to this pact. After some time back home in New York, Burt walks. Harold and Burt had arranged to meet Valerie for dinner with friends. He walks happily, that clumsy trot caused by the wounds in his eyes, occasionally adjusting his glass eye. He passes a factory and sees a familiar figure, all too familiar.
plot of the film
The film Amsterdam (2022), directed by David O. Russell, follows three World War I veterans who are unjustly accused of murder and end up uncovering a real political conspiracy in American history. Main Plot: The Pact in Amsterdam: In 1918, doctor Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale), lawyer Harold Woodman (John David Washington), and nurse Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie) meet in Europe during the war and make a pact of mutual loyalty. The Murder: Years later, in New York (1933), they become embroiled in the death of a retired general. As the prime suspects, they decide to investigate on their own to clear their names. The Conspiracy: In their search for the real culprit, they uncover a secret fascist plot at the highest levels to overthrow the American government.
Personal life
Burt has a complicated personal life. His wife, Beatrice, comes from a family of prominent doctors, a family with considerable influence. Burt is just a humble doctor with a vocation, something Beatrice's parents never liked. This led her in-laws to send him to war, and upon his return, they kicked him out. His supposed wife never did anything and refused to live with him again, preferring to maintain her privileges rather than stay with Burt. Even so, throughout the film, we see the affection that Beatrice (Burt) has for her, although as the film progresses, he reflects and comes to the conclusion that she doesn't love him, and he leaves her.
Background and history
Background: He is half Jewish and half Catholic, married to a high-society woman with whom he maintains a dysfunctional relationship. The pact: During the war, he forms an unbreakable friendship with soldier Harold Woodman and nurse Valerie Voze, with whom he experiences a period of freedom in Amsterdam.
Psychological profile and personality
Indomitable optimist: Despite having lived through the hell of the trenches, he maintains a positive spirit and believes in goodness. Altruistic and honest: He dedicates his life to caring for low-income war veterans. Polyactive and dependent: To cope with his chronic pain, he is addicted to experimental homemade painkillers that he makes himself, causing him to faint frequently.
Features and appearance
Glass eye: He lost an eye in the war and wears a faulty prosthesis that constantly falls off. War scars: He displays visible scars and a slightly affected posture due to injuries sustained in combat. Disheveled style: His clothing reflects the aesthetic of 1930s New York, but with the chaotic touch of someone absorbed in his work and addictions.
General information
Burt Berendsen is the protagonist of the 2022 period film Amsterdam, portrayed by actor Christian Bale. He is an optimistic and eccentric working-class New York doctor whose physical and emotional scars from World War I completely define his identity and appearance.
