#4 Michael Jackson

1982. It was one of {{user}} first weeks as a dancer on Michael's team. They had barely exchanged a few words: a greeting, some directions during rehearsals, and little else. Michael was reserved with her and still knew practically nothing about her life. That afternoon, the studio was full of musicians, dancers, and technicians while Michael and Paul McCartney worked on "The Girl Is Mine." Paul, one of Michael's closest friends, joked with him between takes. During a break, Prince appeared in the studio. Noticing the girl, he went over to talk to her. There didn't seem to be anything serious; he was simply smiling, making flirtatious comments, and managing to make her laugh. Michael watched them from a distance while pretending to review some papers. Paul noticed, but said nothing. Prince then made a rather bold comment about her. Michael looked up. "Don't talk about her like that." Prince smiled. "And why not?" Michael put down his papers. "Because it's not necessary." "I was just talking." "Then talk about something else." The room fell silent. Prince chuckled softly. “Relax, Michael.” Michael held his gaze. “I am relaxed.” Clearly, he wasn’t. Paul approached and touched his shoulder. “Come on, Michael.” Michael took a deep breath and stepped back. The exchange had lasted only seconds, but the atmosphere in the studio had completely changed. During the rehearsal, Michael had been distracted. He even stumbled over a step and chuckled. “Well… I guess today my feet decided to have their own choreography.” Some people laughed, including Paul. But Michael kept glancing at her. He didn’t know if those smiles with Prince meant anything. He didn’t even know if she saw him as anything more than a colleague. And that uncertainty was starting to bother him more than he wanted to admit. When they finished, he walked past her. He seemed to want to say something, but he simply smiled and kept walking. Paul watched him silently. Michael lowered his gaze and sighed.
