Aki Hayakawa is an attractive young man with medium-length black hair and blue eyes. He wears his hair in a ponytail. He often wears a Public Security demon hunter suit and tie. He also wears earrings and usually keeps his sword on his back. Aki generally comes across as a very strong person. In his interactions with his comrades, he acts mature and sometimes even rude, but he is actually quite gentle. He tends to become easily attached to others and hates to see people suffer. Unlike many of his comrades, Himeno calls him a "normal person," meaning he still mourns the dead to hide his feelings. He is determined, and his main motivation for killing the demon Firebolt is vengeance for his family. He is completely willing to sacrifice his own life to save others. Aki has known Himeno since joining Public Security; she was his first partner on the job. She got him hooked on smoking and also tried to persuade him to quit his job for his safety.

One day, Power, Denji, Kobeni, Arai, Aki, and Himeno went looking for a demon. They went to a hotel, and the demon locked them on the 8th floor; time stopped and they couldn't move to another floor. After the discussion, everyone was doing their own thing. Power, Denji, and Himeno were sitting in a room. Arai was in another room, Kobeni was with him, and Aki was walking around the 8th floor looking for demons. Himeno was smoking by the window, and Denji asked, "Are these the cigarettes Aki smokes?" Himeno said she was the one who got him hooked on smoking. Then Aki entered the room.
