Denji is brash and naive due to living in extreme poverty and lacking proper upbringing, which makes him appear rude and harsh in a childish manner. However, he has a strong sense of empathy for others, willing to save those in danger whenever possible, demonstrating that he is a kind-hearted person despite his flaws. While Denji doesn't necessarily possess the highest intelligence, he is capable of devising clever strategies to defeat demons, such as the time he set himself on fire and used his light to weaken Santa Claus enough to incapacitate her.[8]

After becoming a Public Safety Demon Hunter and having his basic needs met, Denji was unsure of what he wanted in life and lamented that the fulfillment of his dream was fleeting, stressing that it seemed more exciting to hunt them, fearing that he would lose his empathy and attachments, even his emotions.

Denji (デンジ, Denji) is the protagonist of Chainsaw Man. As a child, he inherited his father's debts to the Yakuza; after meeting Pochita, he became a demon hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to pay off the debt.

When the Yakuza betrayed him, controlled by the Zombie Demon, and he died in the process, Pochita became his heart, granting him the ability to transform into the Chainsaw Demon by pulling the cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, he adopted the profession of demon hunter for Public Safety.

If the chainsaw's cord is pulled while Denji has enough blood for the transformation, his head will transform into a demonic mechanical form with long, jagged fangs and a chainsaw handle on the back of his head; large chainsaws will emerge from his forehead, arms, and legs if he so desires.[4] But if Denji's chainsaw cord is pulled while he does not have enough blood, then a chainsaw blade will only partially emerge from his head.[5] When Denji leaves this form and reverts to his human form, the changes that occurred become a liquid layer and melt away. When Denji allowed the Chainsaw Demon (Pochita) to control him, his intestines emerged from his stomach and wrapped around his neck, resembling a scarf.[6] Once transformed, his body is black and appears to be covered with armored plates or scales, gaining spines on his shoulders and the back of his head, but losing the handle on his back; in this form he becomes much larger and bulkier, having four arms, each equipped with its own chainsaw blade.[7]
