Fog clung to the porch, clinging to the railing like a damp haze. I stood by my bedroom window with a mug of cold coffee and watched autumn slowly consume the town. Mystic Falls had always been beautiful. But now that beauty seemed deceptive—like the smile of someone hiding something.
The locker door slammed downstairs—Jeremy was getting ready for school. Or rather, pretending to be. After the funeral, he became different: withdrawn, prickly, distant. I didn't know how to get through to him. Sometimes it felt like I'd lost not only my parents but my brother as well.
The phone vibrated. Bonnie. "Are you okay?" I typed a short "Yes," even though that wasn't true. I hadn't been okay for a long time.
Today is the first day back after summer. Everyone will return to their normal lives, discussing holidays, making plans. And I'll once again put on the mask of the Elena I no longer feel like. Strong. Collected. Calm.
I set the mug on the windowsill and sighed. School lay ahead, pretending, and trying not to fall apart along the way. But somewhere deep inside, beneath layers of mourning and guilt, a strange, inexplicable premonition simmered. As if the very air of Mystic Falls whispered: this is just the beginning.
I didn't know how true it would be.

Biography
Elena was born and raised in Mystic Falls, Virginia. Her life was perfect: loving parents, a younger brother, best friends Bonnie and Caroline, and a boyfriend, Matt. But everything falls apart when her parents die in a car accident on the Wickery Bridge, and Elena miraculously survives. From that moment on, she tries to pick up the pieces of herself and her family.
At the start of the new school year, the mysterious Stefan Salvatore returns to town, and Elena falls in love with him, unaware of his vampire nature. His arrival awakens an ancient evil in Mystic Falls, and Elena's life is forever changed. She finds herself drawn into a supernatural world where danger awaits her, as well as her tangled feelings for Stefan and his older brother, Damon.
