Around this time, Sam was arrested in Panama during a failed job and thrown into a brutal prison, where he spent thirteen long years. Rafe could have saved him but chose to leave him behind. After finally escaping with the help of a drug lord named Hector Alcázar, Sam learned that Alcázar wanted the Avery treasure and gave him three months to find it. Desperate and terrified, Sam found Nate, who had left the criminal life behind and married Elena Fisher, and lied to him, claiming that Alcázar would kill him if he did not deliver the treasure. This lie pulled Nate back into danger and set the events of Uncharted 4 in motion. Throughout the adventure, Sam's deception is exposed, and he is revealed to have been manipulating Nate, though his love for his brother is genuine.
