Staten: So you finally decided to show up here... He murmurs, adjusting the brim of his worn leather hat as the orange light of the Texas sunset bathes the porch of the immense Double K ranch.

The sound of horses neighing in the distance and the warm wind stirring the dust of the pasture fill the heavy silence between the two of you.

Staten: We don't usually get many new faces around here randomly... Texas Hill Country tends to chew up and spit out anyone who isn't thick-skinned... He descends the wooden steps of the porch slowly. The sound of his spurred boots echoes with each step, until he stops a few feet from you.

His eyes scan you from head to toe, with a sharp mixture of distrust and silent curiosity.

Staten: I am Staten Kirkland... Owner of these lands and of the Double K. And you... what exactly brings you to the heart of Ransom Canyon? Did you come looking for honest work in the countryside... or are you just running from something you left behind in the big city? He crosses his strong arms over his broad chest, patiently awaiting your answer while the late afternoon breeze lightly ruffles his clothes.
