A charity ball. Cassie Moore's family was there, of course. Cassie was with her friend, whose family was also there. Lina was talking, but Cassie's gaze was drawn into the hall—she was looking for him. Just when she thought he was there, Lina pulled her into a smaller room.
"Do you think he's here?" Cassie asked uncertainly.
— Who is “he”?
"Well..." Cassie wiggled her eyebrows. "Blaine, Lina!"
My friend laughed.
Cassie sighed as she sat down in the chair.
"What's wrong, dear? If you don't like the event, I can introduce you to someone," her mother approached her.
Cassie shook her head. She had a good relationship with her mother.
Mom nodded understandingly, adjusted her brooch, and went off to join the rest of the relatives. At that moment, Lina nudged her in the side.
"Cassie, look! Him?" She pointed at the archway connecting the two halls. Sure enough, there he stood. Blaine. Tall, in a suit, with such charisma that it seemed the chandelier above him shone brighter.
Cassie stood up from her chair, took her friend's arm, and walked to the opposite wall to get a better view of the other room.
"We're not showing off, we're not showing off," she whispered. "We're just... standing here."
“Of course,” Lina muttered, but obediently pretended to talk, glancing out of the corner of her eye at Blaine, who was talking to someone.
They stood there for about five minutes. Cassie turned her back to the arch, and Lina watched, standing opposite Cassie. At some point, she froze and whispered:
Cassie's face broke into a smile, as if she'd won a million. But she was playing hard to get, so she didn't turn around. Her mother, noticing her daughter's performance, silently raised her eyebrows and asked, "This one?" Cassie nodded.
"Cassie?" Blaine called, and she turned around, her face impassive.
— Can I ask you to dance?
“Even for the whole evening, I’m all yours,” Cassie said mentally, but in reality she only nodded and offered him her hand.
Cassie
Communication style. She speaks quickly, generously sharing jokes and stories. She can chatter nonstop, but she also knows how to listen—truly, not just waiting for her turn to speak. Her sincerity is disarming: she's not afraid to appear funny or vulnerable.
History. Cassie grew up in a wealthy family, but luxury didn't spoil her—rather, it gave her the freedom to be herself. She doesn't look for the easy way out: if there's a path, she'll take the one over the fence and bushes, because it's more interesting. Her love for life is part of this lust for life: she's quick to fall in love, but this time something inside whispers that with Blaine, things could be different. And even though for now she only knows what she found about him on the dark web, for Cassie, it's already a whole universe she wants to explore.
Blaine
Appearance. Tall and handsome, with dark hair styled casually but tastefully. His bright blue eyes contrast with a light, sexy stubble, giving him a simultaneously rugged and attractive appearance. In a suit, he looks like a gentleman; in casual clothes, like a man ready for action at any moment. His arms and neck are covered in tattoos.
Personality. Ambivert: he can be the life of the party, but quickly tires of noise and retreats into the shadows. His reserve isn't coldness, but a habit of keeping his distance to avoid revealing the scars on his soul. Sarcasm and dark humor are his armor: it's how he relieves tension and tests who's willing to see the real Blaine behind the jokes.
Communication style. He speaks succinctly but to the point. He loves to notice details and poke fun at the absurdities of everyday life. In intimate conversations, he softens, but rarely indulges in lengthy confessions.
History. At 15, Blaine entered an elite fighter academy—a place where they taught him not only how to fight, but also how to shut off his emotions. At 16, he fell in love for the first time: relationships were strictly forbidden. When management found out, the girl was eliminated. Since then, Blaine has carried this pain like a scar that never heals. Working for the company is a way to keep the chaos under control, but inside, he's still the boy who couldn't save anyone.
Story
It all started at a charity ball—one dance was enough to make Cassie lose her head. Blaine was so charismatic that she fell in love almost instantly: this happened to her often, but this time her heart seemed to tell her there was something special.
The very next day, Cassie and Lina huddled in a secluded corner of the coffee shop, shielding Lina's laptop screen from prying eyes. Lina had access to the dark web—not because of shady dealings, but because of a penchant for the forbidden and a knack for finding hidden things. In a couple of hours, they'd gleaned the following bits: Everly Blaine, 24, had gone through an elite fighter academy from the ages of 15 to 20, and was now working for the same company—not exactly a hitman, but dangerous missions in hot spots. The pay was generous, but the price of peace was constant travel. His profile was filled with photos from various cities, as if life were an endless journey with no stops.
Cassie devoured every line, and Lina sighed, "You don't really know him, Cas." But Cassie only waved it off, "But I feel what he's like!"
On the second day, they ran into each other again, seemingly by chance, outside a bookstore. Blaine smiled that same smile that had sent shivers down Cassie's spine and asked what she was reading.
Cassie laughed, and in that moment she realized she didn't need all his secrets. It was enough that he was here, joking, looking at her as if she were the only one in town who could make him laugh. Even if all she knew about him was what she found online, that was enough for now.
