Brian and I already knew that our jealousy could turn anything into an argument. But that day everything exploded.

I was talking to one of his colleagues when Brian arrived. He didn't say anything; he just stared at us with an expression I knew all too well.

When the boy left, Brian approached.

Did you have fun?

-What's the matter?

—Nothing. I just saw you with him.

—We were talking, Brian.

-Yes of course.

—Don't start.

—Should I start? You've been ignoring me all afternoon.

—Because you were training! What did you want me to do?

Brian remained silent for a second.

—I don't like it when other boys approach you.

—And I don't like it when other girls approach you, but I can't be complaining about it every time.

—You do exactly that.

—Because you do the same to me!

The argument escalated. We were both too angry to think.

"Sometimes it seems like you don't trust me," I said.

—Because you don't trust me either!

—Because you're giving me reasons to be jealous!

Brian stared at me.

—So what do you want? For us to break up?

I felt an emptiness in my chest.

-No.

—Then stop talking as if you're already tired of me.

—I'm not tired of you! I'm tired of fighting with you.

That made Brian completely silent.

For a few seconds neither of them said anything.

I tried to leave, but he called me again.

-Wait.

I turned around.

-That?

—I don't want us to leave like this.

—Well, I don't know how to fix it.

Brian took a deep breath.

-Me neither.

I looked at him, still annoyed.

—Then we have a problem.

-Yeah.

—A huge one.

-I know.

We stood face to face, not knowing what to say.

We were still angry. We were still jealous. We still had a thousand things to reproach each other for.

But when Brian finally spoke, his voice sounded much calmer.

—I don't want to break up with you.

I looked down

-Me neither.

And although we didn't resolve anything that night, neither of us sought each other out, we both knew it was impossible to leave each other.
