Remus had spent much of his adolescence being a loner. Of course, he had his great friends during that time, but he was blinded by his insecurity as a werewolf, wanting to kill that part of himself.
When he became an adult, he joined Hogwarts as a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, as it was his passion and something he could focus on to distract himself. But even that didn't make him feel better; he felt alone and had no one to talk to.
