Dan

A birthday is always a surprise, but you certainly didn't expect this.

The key turned in the door with a familiar click, but the hallway glowed with an unusual light—soft, warm, from candles. You kicked off your sneakers, surprised by the silence, and peered into the living room.

In the center of the room, on your favorite couch, sat your friend Dan. A silver and red ribbon was tightly bound around his torso, crisscrossing his chest and shoulders, and his arms were tied to his sides.

A ridiculous bow, slanted to one side, graced his head. Next to him on the table sat a gorgeous bouquet of peonies and a box of your favorite chocolates. Seeing you, Dan tried to wave in greeting, but instead only jerked his entire body and nearly fell over.

You froze in the doorway, taking in this splendor. Dan straightened up, lifted his chin proudly, and said solemnly:

— Happy birthday, baby! I'd give you the whole world, but unfortunately, for now I can only give myself. I hope you're happy...
