Appearance
Raph is an anthropomorphic mutant turtle and ninja warrior with dark green skin, the darkest of his brothers. He has bright green eyes with black pupils, narrowed into a permanent scowl, but like his brothers, when they fight or operate stealthily, the pupils disappear, leaving his eyes white. He wears a dirty red bandana mask with long, fluttering, frayed, and torn ends. Raph is the team's fiercest and strongest fighter, his body covered in sculpted muscles that emphasize his strength, and a distinct crack—a battle scar—is visible on the left side of his plastron. His height fluctuates between Mikey's and Leo's. His ninja gear consists of dark brown knee and elbow pads, dark brown bandages wrapped around his ankles and wrists, and white bandages wrapped around his fingers. A belt mounts a pair of sai on his back. Unlike his previous incarnations, Raph has two fingers and a thumb on his hands and three toes on his feet.
History
Raphael and his brothers were once ordinary turtles. When they were babies, the kindly Hamato Yoshi bought the four of them as pets. When their future father passed by a strange man, he sensed something was wrong and followed him. Unfortunately, Yoshi gave himself away by accidentally stepping on the tail of a brown rat. The Kraang found him and attempted to kill him, but Yoshi fiercely resisted. During the scuffle, the aliens dropped a container of mutagen, and Yoshi, stepping on the rat, mutated into a humanoid brown rat named "Splinter." Meanwhile, Raph and his brothers, after contact with Yoshi and the pet store clerk where they were purchased, mutated into humanoid turtles. Yoshi raised the turtles as his own children, teaching them ninjutsu. Splinter knew they would never be accepted into society, and with the Kraang hot on his trail, the five of them lived in an abandoned water tower and a warehouse, evading detection. Throughout these ordeals, Splinter and the Turtles grew close, and after noticing how the young Turtles tried to imitate his ninjutsu training, Splinter decided he had an opportunity to turn this new life he'd found himself in to his advantage. Taking one of his favorite books on Renaissance art, he named them after the artists he most admired. After the final battle with the Kraang in the sewers, Splinter overheard the Kraang discussing how they had become impossible to track Splinter and the Turtles down there, and he decided to stay. Thus, Splinter found a safe place to raise his adopted sons. Knowing the world would be dangerous and that a time would come when they would want to explore the outside world, Splinter began training the boys in the arts of ninjutsu. In the end, Splinter gave Raphael his sais, "for a fierce and fearless warrior who will always fight with all his might for his family."
Personality (part one)
Raphael is the archetypal muscular, hot-tempered member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles quartet. However, in this incarnation, Raph can be emotionally unstable. He is brave, courageous, and free-spirited, and if Michelangelo is the comedian of the quartet, Raphael is the most sarcastic and caustic. He is highly skilled in any activity requiring intense physical effort and is very close to his allies, friends, and pets. However, he can be very willful, stubborn, incredibly rude, insensitive, and aggressive. While Leonardo is the most stern and ninja-like of the turtles, Raph is the most militant in the sense that he is the angriest, toughest, most unforgiving, and most ferocious of the turtles. He does not back down from a challenge, especially one involving physical violence, and he does not go down without a fight. He laughs in the face of danger, craves a fight whenever possible, and never hesitates to throw his fists into the fray. All of this makes him a skilled, ferocious, and deadly fighter. Raph loves to fight, wrestle, and cause mayhem. If a fight breaks out, Raphael will gladly engage in it, whether you like it or not. Because of his passion for combat, he fights first and reflects and asks questions later. He does not tolerate insults from anyone. When people, or even his brothers, mock him, he fights back. When Mikey teases him about his pranks, Raph either yells at him or playfully beats him up. He mocks and taunts his family, allies, and enemies with a certain hypocrisy, often making rude remarks. Raph is not afraid to make light of very dark situations. He has cracked jokes about sad, gloomy people who are unhappy. On rare occasions, one of his brothers, especially Leo, or even his sensei would slap him in retaliation.
Personality (part two)
Like his older sister, Miwa, he is also very self-confident and competitive. When he wins games and duels against his brothers, he brags about it to them, much to their dismay. Raph can be unpredictable, and his fierce temper sometimes frightens his enemies, even his brothers. He can be very aggressive when trying to solve problems, even with his family and allies. Sometimes during training, Raph can display hostility and do everything possible to defeat his brothers in sparring. When he feels misunderstood or irritated, he can explode at any moment, sometimes "leaving" the team. According to his younger brother, Donatello, such situations have happened 27 times. When he calms down, he returns to the team. Raph and Leo's relationship is a mixture of love and hate. Raph hates the fact that Leo is chosen as the leader. Sometimes Raph is willing to follow Leo and cooperate with him, and other times he provokes conflict. When provoked, Raph either snaps, uses physical force, or even tries to seize control. On two occasions, Raph successfully seized control from Leo after Leo backed down. Raph's rebellious behavior prevents him from thinking things through before acting. Sometimes Raph thinks things through, and sometimes he rebels. His mood swings make his behavior inconsistent. Sometimes, when he truly thinks things through and tells his brothers they need a plan, it can surprise them. Raph only gets angry because he loves and cares for his brothers very much, such as when he repeatedly lashes out at everyone, especially Donnie, after one of his mutagen experiments nearly blew them all up, including his beloved Spike. Despite all this, Raph also has a soft side towards his two pets: Spike, who later evolved into Slash, and then Chompy, both of whom he loves dearly. His pets always calm him down. Sometimes he shows his softer side to his family and friends. He'll do anything to protect them, but he'll never admit it to maintain his cool and protect his pride. On occasion, he even shows affection for Mikey and other family members.
Physical abilities
Mutant Physiology: As a mutant, Raphael has significantly enhanced his physical abilities thanks to the mutagen. He possesses strength, speed, reflexes, agility, endurance, recovery rate, and overall durability far surpassing even the finest human athlete.
Enhanced Strength: Raphael is physically the strongest of the Turtles, even stronger than Leonardo. This allows him to engage larger and more powerful opponents, such as Slash, Triceriton soldiers, and even Super Shredder, first. He can also carry his three brothers at will. Raphael easily rips off the arm of the humanoid Kraang robot with his bare hands. Raphael can also overpower ordinary humans.
Enhanced Speed: Raphael is capable of moving at incredible speeds, freely gliding across rooftops without losing momentum. He can also spin his sais at incredible speeds. Enhanced Reflexes: He also possesses high reaction speed, allowing him to dodge projectiles such as lasers, Kraang blasters, and enemy attacks. Raphael was able to dodge laser fire from Snake's Kraang-designed weapon at very close range.
Enhanced Healing: Like his brothers, Raphael can heal wounds much faster than normal humans.
Enhanced Stamina: Raphael possesses high stamina and is far stronger than Olympic-level athletes. He has a remarkable ability to continue fighting for over several hours if necessary.
Enhanced Durability: Raphael possesses an extremely high tolerance for pain and has been able to withstand significant impacts throughout his career; for example, he was able to withstand a fall from several stories of a building without showing any signs of injury or discomfort. He also withstood powerful attacks from Shredder, and later suffered only minor injuries, rather than the severe damage Michelangelo suffered. Retractable Limbs: He possesses the turtle-like ability to retract his limbs into his shell.
Semi-aquatic Adaptations: He is capable of swimming long distances, diving deeply, and holding his breath underwater for extended periods.
Anger: As repeatedly shown throughout the series, Raphael's greatest weakness was his anger. However, if channeled correctly, his temper can become his greatest strength, enhancing his combat abilities and physical strength.
Skills
Raphael's most notable ability is his brute strength, which only intensifies when angered. His ability to quickly lose his temper allows him to defeat highly skilled opponents, such as Leonardo, on several occasions. Thanks to years of intensive and comprehensive training under Splinter, Raphael is one of the best fighters on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team, as well as one of the greatest ninjas on Earth. As evidenced by his impressive skill, Raphael quickly adapts non-lethal weapons, such as a fence board, and uses it as his primary weapon to defeat the Foot Clan.
Skills
Okinawan Kobudo (Sai): Raphael was trained by Splinter in the use of sai. While Raph can use his sai to trap enemy weapons at their tips, he also uses them like daggers, stabbing and impaling opponents. He can also spin his sai, similar to how Donnie spins his staff, allowing him to deflect shuriken and lasers. By holding the sai in a reverse grip between his fingers, Raph can use the sai's pommel to enhance the impact of his strikes.
Shurikenjutsu: Raphael can throw shuriken with remarkable accuracy.
Tegaki Mastery: Raphael forged his own tegaki, which resembled a pair of tekko-kagi, but with two blades. He used them like gloves. Stealth: Thanks to his training with Splinter, Raphael, like his brothers, is able to blend into the darkness, hiding and moving in the shadows without being detected.
Pressure Point Intuition: Raphael is capable of using the infamous pressure point technique. He likely learned this technique from Splinter, who previously used it against him.
Creativity: Raphael possesses some artistic skills, having painted a painting of the "Venus de Milo" on the side of a party van. One of his bedroom walls is also covered in splotches of various colors, but without any clear image.
Skateboarding: Like his brothers, Raphael's extensive martial arts training makes him a formidable skateboarder, which he can use to both glide freely across the pavement and outsmart enemies.
Weapons
Raphael uses a pair of twin sais as his signature weapon, and like his brothers, he is highly skilled with their chosen weapons. Furthermore, Raphael is the first to use them not only as piercing weapons but also as grappling and disarming weapons. He also used Yumi's bow and, like his other brothers, is proficient with shuriken (throwing stars). Raphael is also proficient with Kama scythes, kunai, tonfas, and brass knuckles. During his time in space, Raphael used laser sais and a laser blaster created by Fugitoid as his primary weapons.
Family
Leonardo: His relationship with Leonardo is complicated, often leading to angry outbursts from Raphael. He and Leo often argue over who is better at leading the Turtles, but Leo always comes out on top, making Raphael jealous. They seem to bicker more than any other brother, but they also care for each other. They trust each other more as a family, often discussing things in private, away from Donatello and Michelangelo, such as Leonardo's relationship with Karai. Raph often expresses irritation at Leo's constant attempts to speak "heroic language" when Leo is most influenced by the "Space Heroes." However, Raphael comes to respect Leonardo after experiencing his own difficult time as leader. After the Kraang invasion of New York, Leo was seriously injured and fell into a temporary coma. It was Raphael who watched over Leonardo day and night until he recovered. While Leo was recovering from his injuries, Raph seemed to become the de facto leader, as he supervised training with Donnie and Mikey and gave orders when Leo was unable to do so. When Leo became the group's sensei, Raphael began to respect him more.
Donatello: Raph is the least likely to quarrel with Donnie, although they often argue. However, Donatello is no angel either, as he yells at Raphael, often mocking his temper and calling it childish. Raph also blames Donnie for certain situations, such as being transported to another dimension. Like Leo, Raph also tends to rush Donnie in combat situations when he struggles to focus on the technical aspects of combat. They both share a similar short temper. Both occasionally challenge Leonardo's leadership, and both are very impatient with Michelangelo's antics. Raph tried to console Donnie about his feelings for April, telling him to give up because he's a mutant and she's human, and that he should get used to it sooner so it won't hurt as much. He's also very protective of Donatello's feelings. Raph also understands how important Donnie is to the team and worries deeply about him after he gets injured.
Michelangelo: He beats him up jokingly, but he loves him. This is shown when he comforts Mikey, telling him he's a great guy. Michelangelo teases Raphael, causing him to respond aggressively. Raphael has been shown to steer his younger brother toward the dark side when it comes to villains, such as when he told Mikey not to apologize for dropping Bradford, and Mikey obeyed. He cares deeply for Mikey and becomes enraged whenever Mikey is injured by an enemy. He was also the first to show serious concern when he realized Mikey was in danger. He was extremely concerned when Mikey was injured during the battle with Snakequid, even hugging him. When Mikey was kidnapped by Spy Roach during a game of bait, Raph decided to put his fears aside and go save Mikey. Raphael seems to be very close to Michelangelo and is as protective of him as he is of everyone else, as seen when he saves Mikey from drowning with the squirrel-like creatures. Although he doesn't often show it, Raph cares for him very much. Raph is very close to Mikey, sometimes even joking around with him. For example, Donnie starts blabbering about the cold, and Mikey asks Raph if he "maybe he [Donnie] has a kill switch somewhere?" Raph slaps Donnie on the back of the head, causing him to yell "OW!" and shut up. Raph then turns to Mikey and says, "Found it!" and they share a laugh.
Hamato Miwa/Karai: Formally Raphael's older adoptive sister. Raphael hated and distrusted Karai from the moment he laid eyes on her. He tried to warn Leo not to trust her so easily, but also admitted that Leo found Karai attractive "in a sinister way." The two are very similar in personality: both rebellious, stubborn, self-confident, willful, and argumentative. In fact, Raph distrusted Karai the most and was extremely cynical about Leo's adoration of her, constantly engaging in physical and verbal fights with her. Later, after learning the truth about his teacher's daughter, Raph warmed up to her, as did the rest of his siblings.
Hamato Yoshi/Splinter: Raphael's adoptive father. Splinter is the one Raphael listens to the most, despite Raphael's stubbornness.
Chompy: A baby alien turtle, Tokka's child, whom Raphael takes as a pet, and in a sense, takes the place of Spike, who was Raphael's pet and confidant. Raph is very close to Chompy, as he is to Spike.
Friends & allies
April O'Neil is Raphael's first human friend. He and April don't interact much. He was a little offended when the Purple Dragons tried to rob her, but also laughed at her when they thought Pigeon Pete had attacked her. He was also impressed that she escaped from Karai. He and April are good friends. They have become more like family, and Splinter and Mikey consider April and Casey part of their family.
Casey Jones - Raphael initially fought Casey when they first met, but later became close friends, sharing a lot in common (similar personalities). They are often seen patrolling together. They have become more like family, as he considers April and Casey part of his family, though he never says so out loud.
Spike/Slash: Raph's relationship with Slash is complicated, to say the least, as their love for a pet evolved into a conflicted, ambivalent love between the two fully grown, intelligent mutant turtles. Slash was originally Raph's pet turtle, Spike, and one of the few people Raph ever showed love and affection for, typically speaking to him as a person rather than a pet. This tenderness sometimes showed through in Raph and Slash's behavior after they became mutants, with Raph anxiously rushing to check on Slash. When Spike became the mutant Slash, he demonstrated that he had truly listened to Raph all these years, finally reciprocating the love Raph had shown him. They planned to form their own ninja team, but Slash proved unstable, possessive, and cruel when he attempted to kill Raph's brothers to have Raph for himself. Raph rejected what Slash had become, and Slash escaped the feeling of betrayal from the only person he had ever loved. Raph was so devastated by Slash's loss that Splinter had to teach him how to cope with the loss of loved ones. Slash and Raph had little contact when they met again, but Slash protected Raph from danger, showing he still cared for him. Raph and Slash finally reconciled when Slash's calming consciousness gradually distanced him from his then-ally, the Newtralizer, and Slash eventually turned against the Newtralizer to protect Raph, his brothers, and Casey Jones. Raph invited Slash to come home, but Slash declined, choosing to be alone for a while. When the Turtles finally evacuated the Turtle Lair, Raph revealed that his most treasured personal possession was a photograph of Spike, expressing his concern for Slash. After their exile in North Hampton, Raph and Slash met again, immediately reconnecting. Raph trusted Slash, even though his brothers still doubted him. From this point on, their relationship became more informal: Raph and Slash presented themselves as loyal friends, but showed far less affection. Slash is one of the few close friends or family members who consistently refers to Raph by his three-syllable name, "Raphael," except on two occasions when he pronounces it "Raph."
Leatherhead: Raphael never directly interacted with Leatherhead, but he disagreed with Michelangelo's befriending him, considering him dangerous.
Timothy/Shredder/Mutagen Man: Raphael simply found him annoying and didn't particularly care for his safety, but he tried to help rescue him.
Enemies
Oroku Saki/Shredder: Since Shredder is Splinter's sworn enemy, Raphael also hates Shredder.
Krangi: Raphael dislikes the Krangi and will do anything to stop their invasion plans. The Krangi also hate the Turtles because they are the only force powerful enough to stop them. This rivalry is much more personal for the Turtles than their rivalry with the Foot Clan.
Victor/Spider Bytes: One of Raphael's sworn enemies. Raphael and Spider Bytes have hated each other since their first meeting. Raphael despises him for insulting him, while Spider Bytes, as Vic, enjoyed mocking and insulting Raphael. When he caught the Turtles on video, Raphael wanted to punch him in the face. Vic hates them because he and his brothers broke his phone and satellite dish. Vic also blames Raphael and his brothers for turning him into a spider-mutant and tried to kill Raphael's brothers, but Raphael managed to contain his anger and defeat him. For some reason, Spider-Bitez calls them "kung-fu frogs." Spider-Bitez is one of the three villains Raphael hates most; the others are Chong and Fishface.
Baxter Stockman: Raphael dislikes him and enjoys throwing him in the trash.
Xever Montez/Fishface/Mr. X: One of Raphael's sworn enemies. He fights him at every opportunity, and they seem to be evenly matched in strength, as they were the strongest fighters in their respective groups. However, unlike Spider-Bitez and Chong, Raphael and Fishface respect each other and have much in common. They work well together and seem similar due to their aggressiveness and willingness to fight to the bitter end. Fishface even tells Raphael about his past. Raphael and Fishface also once saved each other, and Raphael was later able to detect Fishface's attack on Leonardo before it caused any harm. Despite their many similarities, Raphael and Fishface are sworn enemies.
Chris Bradford/Dogpound/Rahzar: One of Raphael's enemies. He dislikes him, but their rivalry is much less intense than the one between Raphael and Fishface.
Cockroach Spy: One of Raphael's sworn enemies. Due to his fear of cockroaches, Raphael hates and fears Chong. Chong also hates Raphael because Raph tried to kill him when he was a normal cockroach. Chong stopped at nothing to kill Raph, exploiting Raph's fear of him and his own mutation. Raph tried to escape him but was forced to face his fear when Chong kidnapped Mikey. Raph managed to rescue Mikey with the Stealth Bike and, overcoming his fear, fought the mutant cockroach, crushing its face with the Stealth Bike's wheel. Chong returned for a second round, but Raph defeated him in hand-to-hand combat and destroyed him with a Kraang drill, despite being unaware of the eggs Chong had laid with the mutant cockroaches shortly after Chong's defeat.
Neutralizer: Another enemy of Raphael.
Ivan Steranko/Rocksteady: Raphael's enemy.
Trivia
Raphael is named after the famous Renaissance artist, Raphael Sanzio da Urbino.
Raphael's name is Hebrew, meaning "God has healed." Raphael is the only turtle with a Hebrew name, while all three of his brothers have Italian names. He is also the only turtle whose name does not end with an "o" sound. This is because the turtles were named after the common English names of four Renaissance artists, and unlike the others, the artist Raphael is not usually called by his Italian name, Raffaello. In katakana, Raphael's name is written as ラファエル (Rafaeru). Given that he was adopted by Hamato Yoshi/Splinter, Raphael's full name would be "Hamato Raphael" or "Raphael Hamato" in Western naming convention.
His ninjutsu skills include taijutsu, qigong, shurikenjutsu, kobudo, kayajutsu, shinobi-iri, boyaku, suiren, archery, and intonjutsu.
Raphael is the second eldest of his brothers; Leonardo is the eldest, and Raphael himself is older than Donatello and Michelangelo.
While never stated directly, it is implied that Raphael is an art enthusiast, as he nicknamed Y'Gitgbe "Mona Lisa" after the artwork of the same name, and his new pet Chompy Picasso, "Picasso" being the surname of the famous artist Pablo Picasso.
Raphael's shell and body are the most scarred compared to those of his brothers.
His mask has the longest and most tattered tails.
Donatello sometimes calls Raphael "a big baby."
Raphael has catzaridaphobia (an irrational fear of cockroaches) and is terrified of Donatello's pet spy cockroach (or "Chong"). He eventually overcomes his fear of insects.
Raphael has a weak and sensitive stomach. He becomes nauseated at the sight of severed insect parts. He can also suffer from motion sickness, as he sometimes feels nauseated when traveling in a spaceship and floating through space.
Raph's favorite color is red.
He hates sour cream and dislikes the smell of lilacs.
He is right-handed.

He has several bumps on the top of his head that are a purpler magenta color. He has freckle like things on his snout that are dark red. His iris is magenta. He possess the normal scaly skin of a turtle. His tongue is also a light purple colour.Chompy Picasso is capable of biting, and breathing/farting fire.
Ice Cream Kitty - Originally just a normal feline, when the cat consumed mutagen-tainted ice cream, it turned into an amorphous ice cream mutant. Her body is composed of Neapolitan Ice Cream, with the head being strawberry, the torso made of vanilla, and the waist and lower body made of chocolate with short stubby arms made of chocolate and vanilla. Her tail is made out of vanilla and chocolate also.
