Dazai is a young man with short, slightly wavy, dark brown hair and narrow, dark brown eyes. His bangs frame his face, with some strands gathering in the center of his forehead. He is quite tall and slender.
For his attire, Dazai wears a long, sand-colored trench coat, the belt of which he leaves undone. Underneath, he wears a black vest over a light blue, striped dress shirt. He sports a bolo tie, secured with a brown ribbon and a turquoise pendant. He also wears beige trousers, dark brown shoes, and has bandages wrapped around his entire body; only his face, hands, and feet remain uncovered. Beneath his bandages are numerous scars.

When he was in the Mafia, Dazai wore a black trench coat that reached below his knees. He also wore bandages over his right eye and his right arm in a sling. At some point, he was able to regain the use of his right arm.

Dazai is a mysterious person; his true intentions are never revealed unless he chooses to reveal them. Dazai is often called lazy, as Kunikida constantly berates him for being unproductive and idle. Despite this, he has demonstrated sharp wit, deducing all the improbable situations that led Atsushi to believe he was being stalked by a tiger when he was actually the tiger in question. He is completely confident no matter the situation he is dealing with, whether in combat or simply in bad situations he created in the first place. Most of the time, Dazai is overly dramatic, treating most of his actions as a joke, and although his plans are well thought out, he doesn't give himself credit for most of what he does. Dazai enjoys making fun of anyone and everyone if it means he can get a laugh. In the present, he is more cheerful and comical, but he still retains some of his darker personality. He is still capable and competent at devising long-term strategies, although he doesn't inform his teammates of what they are until the opportune moment. He appears willing to use underhanded means to achieve his goals.

In the past, he was shown to be far less comical. He even described death as a way to be freed from the corrosive world, yet, oddly enough, he couldn't die. Furthermore, he was extremely brutal and methodical, setting traps to capture captives alive in order to torture them for information, and he often beat Akutagawa for disobeying orders, pushing him to his limits to hone his skills. He was very confident and an excellent planner, devising long-term strategies to subdue his enemies. Oda once noted that there was a saying in the Mafia that the worst thing for Dazai's enemies was the fact that they were his enemies.

Unworthy of Being Human (人間失格, Ningen Shikkaku) This allows Dazai to nullify the Skills of others on contact. His ability is based on skin contact and is always active. As such, he can nullify any Skill even when restrained as soon as he touches it.
