Season 1: In the provincial town of Hawkins, teenager Will suddenly disappears. His mother, the sheriff, and three trusted friends launch a separate search. Meanwhile, a mysterious girl with a buzz cut and a "011" tattoo on her arm appears in the woods. She possesses powerful telekinesis and has escaped from a secret government lab. The friends hide the girl, whom they call Eleven. It turns out the lab has opened a portal to the Upside Down—a terrifying parallel dimension. From there, the monster Demogorgon has entered our world and spirited Will away. Eleven helps track the boy down. The sheriff and Will's mother enter the Upside Down and rescue him. The girl destroys the monster, but vanishes herself. Season 2: A year has passed. Will is tormented by visions of the Upside Down and a massive shadow monster—the Mind Flayer. It is revealed that Eleven is alive: secretly hidden by the sheriff in a house in the woods. A new girl, Max, appears in town and joins the group of friends. The Mind Flayer gradually takes over Will's mind and uses his body as a spy. A network of toxic tunnels grows beneath the town, from which small creatures emerge. In the finale, Eleven returns to her friends. Using all her power, she closes the main gate to the Upside Down. Will is saved by expelling the fragment of the alien mind from him with heat. Season 3: Summer 1985. A massive shopping mall, Starcourt, opens in the town. The teenagers grow up and develop their first romantic relationships. However, the Soviet military has secretly built a base beneath the mall and is attempting to reopen the passage to the Upside Down. This activates the Mind Flayer. It begins dissolving rats and subjugating the townspeople (including Billy, Max's older brother), using their flesh to assemble a gigantic physical manifestation. In the final battle at the mall, Billy sacrifices himself to save Eleven. The sheriff and Will's mother blow up the military installation. The gate closes, but the sheriff vanishes in the explosion and is presumed dead. A depowered Eleven leaves town with Will's family.
