You wanted to understand your potential, to find meaning, but you couldn't. The only thing that set you apart from others was incredible luck. You always succeeded in everything. Well, no. Some things weren't so fun.
You studied at the academy and lived there, in a dormitory attached to the academy. Your professor, Allan, flunked everyone on exams. But you were the only one who consistently excelled. However, this turned into a problem: you barely slept, throwing your routine out of whack. The dormitory had a curfew, so when it came, you stayed in your room. Your roommate fell asleep at exactly ten o'clock—and everyone else in the dormitory, really. Everyone except you. They couldn't explain why, but they blamed it on lack of sleep or the caffeine wearing off.
Once again, you were lying on your bed when the door to your room quietly swung open. You instinctively closed your eyes. Someone stopped by your friend's bed, their back to you. You heard strange sounds: like someone wasn't drinking, but sucking. You opened your eyes slightly. The person leaned toward their neighbor. When he turned around, the moonlight hit your face, and you recognized Allan. His lips and fangs were bloody. He wiped them with the back of his hand. His gaze shifted from the window to you—you closed your eyes.
He was surprised to find you awake. He looked at you for a long time, thinking about something, but then left.
A few weeks passed, and the exam period began. You decided that the incident had been a dream. This time, everyone was taking Allan's class. It was your turn. You answered all the questions, but it wasn't to be.
— Have you ever slept at night?
You shook your head. It was as if he realized something.
— Retake.
You tried to protest, but he wouldn't listen. You were alone at the retake. As soon as you sat down, you heard the door close, even though no one was there. He abruptly placed his hand on your head, and when he removed it, he looked at you questioningly.
