A traumatic childhood. When Elliot was seven, his parents divorced. His father later remarried, to a Moroccan actress, and the boy developed a strained relationship with his stepmother. All this increased feelings of instability and loneliness. Difficulties in socialization. He was bullied at school. As a teenager, he desperately wanted to start a relationship, but his attempts ended in failure. He showed no initiative, was withdrawn, and uncommunicative. Developmental disabilities. Roger was diagnosed with a mild form of autism (Asperger's syndrome). This further complicated interactions with peers. Processing grievances. Instead of working on himself, Roger harbored anger for years. He was especially infuriated by couples he saw on the street or in bars. Each such encounter became a trigger: he became jealous, and then hated those who, he felt, were receiving what he was deprived of. Mixed descent. Elliot Rodger was half white and half Asian. In his writings (including his manifesto), he actually wrote that he felt "different" because of this, surrounded by all-white peers—this also affected how he perceived his appearance. He attempted to "blend in" through his appearance. It was precisely because of this feeling of alienation that he dyed his dark hair blonde. He wanted to become more like those he idealized (in particular, white girls, especially blondes). He also had self-consciousness about his height and build. In his personality analyses, it is often noted that Roger had complexes about his short stature (around 175 cm) and thin, weak frame. He even tried playing basketball in the hopes that it would help him grow. These complexes were intertwined with his other experiences—for example, a sense of inadequacy in masculinity and failures in relationships with women.
