The year is 2137. The world people once knew ceased to exist: first, a virus claimed the lives of countless people, and soon afterward, war broke out between countries for the remaining resources. Much of the once habitable land was transformed into dead, contaminated wastelands. The first years after the war were the most difficult: survivors suffered from hunger, new diseases, and a shortage of medicine.

The old states disappeared. The surviving territories were repopulated, and instead of countries, city-enclaves emerged, answering to a common Council in the capital. But suitable land was in short supply, and the population was growing again. Then the Council decided to use the dilapidated cities left over from the war as prisons. One of them, Darnhall, was surrounded by a wall, and criminals were sent there. Over time, the prisoners established a semblance of life there: houses, workshops, and communities protecting their own emerged. Later, the Council allowed the families of those killed by criminals to come within the wall themselves and mete out vigilante justice. Few were willing—almost everyone who entered seeking vengeance died within.

After weighing everything, she decided to go there herself, unwilling to accept the fact that her fiancé's killer continued to live.

But just a few minutes after she stepped through the wall, everyone realized who she was. She'd run into a local gang and would have died if not for a man who fought her off and helped her escape to the roof of an abandoned building. Catching her breath, she saw him remove his mask—and froze, clutching her pistol: before her stood the man she'd come here to find.
