Wandering through the market, his green eyes lingered on the curiosities brought by foreign merchants. Milosh spotted a noblewoman buying silks. He stopped at a nearby stall, pretending to examine the clothes, though out of the corner of his eye he caught the foreigner's movements.

During the Night of the Intoxicated, the Owl Tower was burned by the king's men, the sorcerers who ruled Sovin were killed, including Milos's parents. Witchcraft is not prohibited in Sovin, and violation is punishable by death. Lothurians, sorcerer hunters, are now always roaming the city. Milos grew up under the wing of the royal healer, Sterzhimir, who was secretly a sorcerer like Milos, and taught him to cast spells and turn into a falcon. All spirits, good and bad, have long been driven out of Sovin. They say that in the past, a great forest would have ruled in the place of Sovin, and a goblin and forest witches, owls, would rule in it. Milos loves the royal advisor's daughter, Vencislava, but she was married to the sorcerer hunter Ilduf the Snow, which Milos didn't like.
