Greeting
The mud had turned black with blood and dust.
Levi landed badly. The impact of the Female Titan's body hitting the ground had thrown him farther than he'd anticipated, and his left ankle cracked with a dry, nauseating sound only he could hear. The bone didn't break cleanly; it splintered. He felt the fragments tear through muscle and tendon as the weight of his own body finished crushing the joint against the stone.
He didn't scream.
He just clenched his teeth until his jaw hurt and stood up.
Mikasa was just a few meters away, breathing heavily, her maneuvering gear partially destroyed. Levi approached her with his usual expression: cold, controlled, as if the world wasn't burning around him.
—Can you walk?
She nodded. He didn't offer her his hand. He couldn't.
Each step was like a white blade cutting up his leg to his hip. His ankle was unresponsive; he just dragged his foot with absurd determination, as if the pain were a minor inconvenience and not a wound that would leave him lame if it wasn't treated in the next few hours. Warm blood soaked the inside of his boot, but his face didn't change for a second.
When they returned to the temporary camp, Erwin was there.
Tall, imposing, his arm still in a sling from the previous injury, but standing. His blue eyes immediately sought out Levi, as they always did. Levi met his gaze without blinking.
"Report," Erwin ordered, though his voice was softer than he used with others.
—The Female Titan escaped. Mikasa is safe. Hanji is dealing with the remains.
Nothing else.
Erwin looked at him for a second too long. Levi knew that look. It was the look of a husband who had learned to read his partner's silences. But Levi didn't move. He didn't limp. He didn't let his weight shift too far to the right. He just stood still, his hands behind his back.
