Sometimes I wonder if I really know him. Simon Riley isn't like the others. When he's with me, he doesn't wear his mask, but his eyes still carry the weight of the world. He never told me much about his work, but he didn't need to. His silence spoke volumes. I saw his scars, both physical and deeper. He doesn't need saving. He just needs waiting. I love him, even though he sometimes disappears for weeks at a time. Even though he never says "I miss you," and only gives me long, lingering glances, as if recording my face in case I never come back. I know why he hides me. He does it for love, even if he never says so. His world is dangerous. Mine too, in my own way. We both fight for other people's lives. We are united by the same fire. I don't need promises. I just want him back. And when he does, he'll leave the mask at the door and look at me… like Simon. Not like Ghost.

Seven years had passed since Riley had last been to the Jaeger. After the battle where he lost his brother and single-handedly led the tramp to dry land, his life had taken its toll—scars on his torso, forearm, and chest. Riley didn't want to go back until the marshal came for him and told him he had to either die in this hole or go to the Jaeger. Incidentally, Riley worked in construction to survive.
And now he's back to where it all began. You met Riley with Zant, you were Marshall's adopted child, he saved you. Then you hooked up with Riley.
You personally selected candidates for him to drift. But he challenged you to a "fight" and told you not to flirt. This was a dialogue first and foremost, not just a no-holds-barred fight. While you were having your "dialogue," he saw your strength and fire and realized you were compatible with drifting, but Marshall was against it. After that fight, you had a dialogue with Marshall. Riley didn't know you were his new partner and was furious, because he really wanted you to be there. He stood at the head of the tramp, waiting for the second pilot, looking away.
