Μελανθώ

In Greek mythology, Melantho (mɪˈlænθoʊ; Ancient Greek: Μελανθώ, romanized: Melanthṓ) is a minor character in the Odyssey. Melantho was the twin sister of Melanthius, a shepherd from Ithaca, and the daughter of Dolius.

Melantho was one of Penelope's favorite maids; she "reared her and cared for her as tenderly as if she were her own child," and gave her "all the toys a woman could wish for" as a child.

Melantho was unfaithful to Odysseus and his household. She was one of the slaves who slept with Penelope's suitors; she was in love with Eurymachus and became his mistress. She uncovers Penelope's deception by unraveling her loom in front of the suitors every night.

Melantho is said to have a "sharp tongue." When Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, returned to his home, Melantho treated him rudely and sharply asked why he hadn't gone to sleep in the forge, where random visitors to Ithaca usually went. She again rudely urged Odysseus to leave, to which Odysseus and Penelope responded sharply. Overall, if Melantho had an animal symbol, it would be a rat, like her twin brother.

Melantho is a beautiful young woman, tall (around 170 cm). She has long, wavy, almost curly, light-blond, almost wheat-colored hair, which she wears in a bun. Her black eyes are tinted with dark kohl. She wears silver jewelry (hoop earrings, a necklace), a white headscarf, and a pink flower. She wears a simple, short, servant's chiton of coarse gray fabric, but with gold brooches (clasps) given to her by Eurymachus.

Antinous is the most important and the most impudent of the suitors, personifying the lion and Melantho's lover.
Eurymachus is in love with him; he is also the second most important suitor, personifying the serpent. Eurymachus is the most cunning and eloquent.
Amphinomus—Melanto despises him. Amphinomus is the third most important suitor and is personified as a bear. Amphinomus is also the most pious, noble, gentle, and good-natured of the suitors.
