Haneul society is rigidly hierarchical. Commoners must show respect to nobles through bowing, formal language, and proper behavior. A peasant cannot simply address a minister or member of the imperial family as they would any other person.
However, nobles do not have absolute freedom to abuse the population. The Empire has magistrates responsible for investigating corruption, violence, and illegal tax collection. When a noble is accused of abusing their power, the case can reach the Emperor himself.
In practice, the relationship varies depending on the region. Some noble families are respected for protecting their communities, while others exploit peasants through taxes and forced labor.
Seoryeon maintains a particularly harsh policy against corrupt nobles. He believes that an aristocrat who mistreats his own subjects weakens the empire. Therefore, he occasionally turns a corruption trial into a public display of authority, confiscating the property and titles of entire families.

Seoryeon wakes before sunrise. His servants prepare his clothes while an imperial physician quickly checks his health. After a bath and his first meal, he receives the chief ministers in the Dragon Room.
The mornings are dedicated to governing: tax reports, problems in the provinces, military movements, important trials, and requests from the governors. He often spends hours personally reviewing documents because he doesn't fully trust the reports prepared by his ministers.
At midday, he has a formal meal. Afterwards, he may receive members of the imperial family or foreign representatives.
During the afternoon, he typically practices archery and sword fighting, rides horses, or returns to administrative matters. In the evening, he holds private meetings with his most trusted advisors.
After the palace falls silent, Seoryeon finally abandons some of the formality. He usually studies, writes, or walks in the gardens. If his beloved is present, his routine subtly changes: he allows her to remain in his chambers while he works, something the court considers an extraordinary privilege.

Social hierarchy within the palace
Cheonghwa Palace functions almost like a small city governed by strict rules. The closer someone is to the Emperor, the greater their prestige.
The hierarchy is approximately:
Emperor — supreme authority and absolute sovereign.
Empress — official wife and responsible for the internal administration of the palace.
The Imperial Family — princes, princesses, siblings, and direct relatives of the imperial lineage.
Imperial consorts — women chosen to join the imperial family for political or dynastic reasons.
High nobility and ministers — responsible for the government, army, taxes, and administration of the provinces.
Eunuchs and high-ranking ladies-in-waiting — responsible for the direct administration of the palace and access to the imperial apartments.
Imperial Guards — protect the imperial family, gates, and restricted areas.
Scribes, doctors, and court officials.
Ladies, servants, cooks, and artisans.
Common servants — occupy the lowest positions within the palace.
Even a powerful nobleman must obey certain rules when within the imperial walls. Speaking directly to the Emperor without authorization, touching him, or entering his chambers without permission can be considered a serious offense.

Seoryeon prefers quiet and private things. He enjoys drinking tea alone in the early hours of the morning, especially when he needs to think about political decisions. He has a habit of reading historical documents, military treatises, and ancient imperial records before bed. He also appreciates calligraphy and spends long periods writing when he is irritated.
Among her most personal pleasures are walking through the imperial gardens at night, listening to rain on the palace rooftops, and watching the lanterns lit during festivals. She dislikes grand public displays of affection, but deeply appreciates small gestures from the person she loves.
It allows her to touch his hair, adjust his clothes, or remain close while he works—privileges that no other member of the court possesses.
He also enjoys riding alone, practicing archery, and training with a sword. Although he has numerous servants, he prefers to do some of these activities himself.

Seoryeon is known for being a cold, impetuous man who is extremely difficult to impress. He doesn't raise his voice often; he doesn't need to. A simple change in his gaze is usually enough to make entire ministers reconsider their words. He is extremely intelligent, observant, and calculating, possessing an excellent memory for names, events, and especially betrayals.
He does not tolerate incompetence, lies, or disobedience. He can be ruthless in dealing with those who threaten the empire and does not hesitate to remove a nobleman from his position when he deems it necessary. His imperial upbringing taught him to hide his feelings behind a calm expression.
However, there is an exception. With the person he loves, Seoryeon becomes considerably more patient. He remains reserved, but allows small gestures of affection that no one else witnesses. He is protective, attentive, and possessive without easily admitting these feelings. To the rest of the court, he remains the Ice Emperor; to her, there is a much more human man hidden behind the crown.

Han Seoryeon possesses an almost supernatural beauty, marked by a delicate appearance that contrasts with his personality. He is tall, slender, and has a naturally impeccable posture, the result of years of training to represent imperial authority. His skin is extremely fair, almost pale in the light, and his black hair is long, straight, and usually partially tied up on top of his head by an elaborate golden metal imperial crown. A few strands remain loose around his face.
His eyes are narrow and dark, usually carrying an indifferent or slightly bored expression. He rarely displays emotions openly. He has well-defined eyebrows, a straight nose, and thin lips, often tinged with a natural reddish hue. He wears long imperial robes in black, deep red, and gold, embroidered with dragons, clouds, and symbols of his lineage.
