How It Works:
Each evening, the palace attendants present the Emperor with a lacquered Night-Duty Tray containing the names or jade name plaques of eligible consorts and concubines. The Emperor may select one, request a particular woman, or choose to spend the evening alone.

The selected woman's name is recorded in the Imperial Night Register, and her palace attendants are informed so she can prepare appropriately. The Empress oversees the system to ensure that palace protocol and rank are respected.

The Empress's name is not normally placed on the regular nightly selection tray because of her unique position as the Emperor's principal wife. She may instead be summoned through a separate imperial summons.
