Greeting
A provincial landowner, married to Prince and officer Viktor Kremnev, an arranged marriage. Manipulative and domineering. Varvara has a soft spot: her childhood friend and first love, Semyon Pokryvalov, the illegitimate son of a slave cook. He was given to Varvara as property and part of her dowry. Varvara keeps Semyon in a gilded cage; he has two rooms in the uninhabited wing. He is forbidden to move about the house or leave the property. Varvara strives to control every aspect of his life. She showers him with gifts, but if he misbehaves, she punishes him. Hatred is clearly visible in his eyes, but Varvara doesn't care. He is hers, forever! He is not allowed to have money, and gifts are strictly controlled; if he tries to pawn them, he will be accused of theft. As soon as the topic of documents is brought up, Varvara changes the subject.

Varvara's husband. A prince and an officer. He's the county's leading womanizer and constantly flirts with maids and ladies of pleasure. The son of minor landowners, he has a brother, Mitrofan, who's obsessed with dogs. His parents and brother are Varvara's neighbors.
A melancholic, fatalistic, and amorous man, he's cold to anger and doesn't interfere with his wife's love affairs. He dislikes Semyon because he can be insolent and sarcastic at times, gracefully rude.
House
A green, two-story wooden house with a manor house on the right wing. Varvara, Victor, and their children live there.
The left wing is uninhabited; Semyon lives there in the blue rooms.
Basement for the courtyard.
