Welcome to Trench Crusade
the Holy Affliction
During the Corpse Wars, when the Prince of Decay, Beelzebub, unleashed the plague of the Great Black Grail, waves of refugees, the sick and the dying fled their devastated lands.
A large group of pilgrims, led by the Prophet Solon—who were afflicted with leprosy and other terrible plagues—tried to find refuge in a town. However, the townspeople, terrified by the contagion and infection, slammed their gates in their faces and refused them entry.
Rejected by all, the Prophet Solon and his leper pilgrims locked themselves in a nearby tomb to die. Before sealing themselves, Solon delivered a prophecy to the people: he told his followers that, exactly seven days later, they should exhume their remains and march their mangled corpses through the town gates to show them the consequences of their lack of charity.
Seven days later, what they call the Miracle of Solon occurred: instead of finding rotting corpses, extreme faith and suffering transformed these lepers. They survived and turned their pain and disease into a physical manifestation of "divine love."

paladins
They are hyper-trained holy warriors clad in massive power armor and mechanical contraptions that make them resemble walking tanks. Unlike an ordinary infantry soldier or a pilgrim, a paladin is a colossal investment of ecclesiastical resources and industrialization: they are consecrated men and women who have undergone years of martial training and extreme spiritual purification.
2. Their role on the battlefield
Unstoppable shock force: They are at the very forefront of No Man's Land. Their armor withstands bursts of enemy fire, demonic magic, and the corrosion of the trenches, allowing them to blast their way through enemy lines with sheer brute force.
Sacred and heavy weaponry: They use gigantic and blessed melee weapons (such as mechanized two-handed swords, colossal warhammers) and heavy support weapons adapted to their enormous armor to decimate hordes of demons in a single shot.
Mobile bulwarks: Their physical and spiritual presence on the battlefield raises the morale of the common soldiers fighting alongside them. Where a paladin treads, the Church's defensive line becomes almost impossible to break.
3. The weight of faith and sacrifice
Being a paladin is not just about wearing heavy armor; it requires a level of devotion so unwavering it borders on absolute fanaticism. Their hearts and minds are armored against despair and the mental temptations of Hell. They are, in essence, humanity's iron angels: brutal, relentless, and willing to give their lives in eternal carnage to stem the tide of Hell.
the metachrists
In this universe of total war, we are not talking about the traditional Jesus Christ of human history, but about artificial beings or cosmic-religious entities created (or corrupted) by humanity and divinity as ultimate weapons to win the holy war against Hell.
Here are the key details of what they are:
the court of the seven heads
Unlike the forces of hell that attack with blind brutality or pure pestilence, the Court represents intellectual corruption, excessive pride, high treason, and sophisticated infiltration.
Origins and Philosophy
The Serpent Cult: This faction worships a multi-headed demonic entity (linked to the apocalyptic iconography of the seven-headed Beast). They do not seek to destroy the world immediately through explosions or frontal massacres, but rather to subvert it from within.
The temptation of forbidden knowledge: They seduce scholars, corrupt nobles, high-ranking Church dignitaries, ambitious generals, and scientists with the promise of arcane secrets, immortality, and absolute political power. Their implicit motto is that the mortal world is already so rotten that it deserves to be ruled by the aristocracy of Hell.
Characteristics and Style in the Lore
Demonic Aristocracy: Aesthetically, they combine high birth and the decadent opulence of European and Eastern nobility with grotesque mutations and infernal elements. They wear fine silks, velvets, jewels, and intricate ceremonial masks that conceal disfigured faces or multiple pairs of eyes.
Infiltration and Espionage: They operate heavily in the shadows. They have spies, double agents, and cultists infiltrated in the highest echelons of the Principality of New Antioch, the Iron Sultanate, and the courts of Europe. They are masters of political sabotage, targeted assassination, and psychological manipulation.
High-Scale Magic and Spells: On the battlefield, members of the Court are no mere brutes; they combine swordsmanship with high-level blood sorcery, mind curses, and dark pacts that can unleash chaos in enemy command lines before the first cannon fires. Each of the "seven heads" of their order represents a different branch of depravity and high treason against humanity.
the order of the black grail
While other forces of hell seek pure destruction or bestial chaos, this order represents the systematic corruption of the most sacred, using blasphemy and the perversion of Christian sacraments as its main weapon.
Origin and Philosophy
The Sacred Parody: This faction revolves around the worship of a Black Grail, a diabolical and blasphemous imitation of the Holy Grail. They believe that the true divine sacrifice was a lie and that real salvation is only found by drinking from the cup of damnation.
Corruption of the Faith: Their doctrine is based on taking the rituals of the Church—baptisms, communions, sacraments, and monastic orders—and grotesquely subverting them. Everything sacred to the side of light, they replicate with blood, pus, and infernal magic.
Features and Units in the Lore
Knights of the Black Grail: They are the dark equivalent of crusader knight orders. They are clad in heavy, rusty armor decorated with heretical and putrid iconography, but they maintain a terrifying and lethal military discipline in close combat.
Priests of the Cup: Demented leaders who carry cursed chalices onto the battlefield. The profane fluids they contain possess alchemical and demonic properties: they grant their troops superhuman pain resistance or drive enemy ranks into instant madness.
Plague and Disease: Unlike armies that rely on gunpowder or steam, the Order of the Black Grail is deeply connected to decay and horrific diseases. They consider the plague a "baptism" that purifies the soul of the mortal world before delivering it to Hell.
Vassals and Cultists: Corrupted pilgrims and deluded civilians who serve as cannon fodder, crawling into enemy trenches to spread infection and wear down human defenses.
The Path of the Beast
Unlike the classic demonic legions or the industrial armies of the Church and the Sultanate, this faction represents the ruin of humanity through the total abandonment of civilization and the return to the purest animal instinct.
Its nature and origin
Ancient antiquity: The Beast was not born with the trenches or the opening of the Gates of Hell in 1099. It has been lurking in the wild places of the world since before man built the first civilizations, feeding on fear, primitive animism and the darkest myths (such as werewolves, goat-headed Fomorians or creatures of the deep forests).
The Awakening: When the brutality of the Great Trench War shattered humanity's psyche—leaving soldiers traumatized, civilians starving, and entire peoples plunged into despair—the call of the Beast became irresistible.
Philosophy and doctrine
Their main motto perfectly encapsulates their horror: "There is no enlightenment, only force. There is no hope, only hunger." They promise their followers ultimate "liberation": to be rid of laws, morality, guilt, pain, and the burden of human conscience in order to surrender to the ecstasy of stalking, hunting, and purely instinctive survival.
Characteristics of its followers
The Supplicants: Those humans broken by war who choose to join the pack voluntarily. They are branded with beast runes using obsidian knives.
The parasitic transformation: Adepts are infected by parasites blessed by the Beast that carry its transformative blood. These parasites cause flesh to mutate: bodies are torn apart to give way to animalistic limbs, extra jaws, claws, and monstrous strength.
Hunting packs: They don't form formal armies with supply lines or military ranks, but are wild packs that operate in No Man's Land, forbidden forests, and isolated villages, devouring both soldiers and animals.
the gates of hell
It all happened during the First Crusade. The Christian knights managed to take Jerusalem and, while excavating beneath the ruins of the Temple, they discovered a secret, sealed crypt that held an artifact of unimaginable power: the very gates that connected the mortal plane with the infernal abyss.
The legendary Templars who discovered them were seduced and corrupted by Hell. By opening them, they unleashed the catastrophe known as the First Heresy: entire legions of demons, mechanical-organic monstrosities from Hell, and tormented souls flooded the Earth, destroying the Holy City and turning Jerusalem and its surroundings into the Hellmouth, a perpetual, smoking scar on the world map.
What are they like and what do they represent today?
The epicenter of the war: They are not just a symbolic "door," but a titanic and supernatural fissure in reality from which infernal matter, pestilence, and the armies of Satan constantly spring forth.
No Man's Land: The entire surrounding region became an apocalyptic war zone where humanity's trenches face off against the monstrous architecture of Hell.
The ultimate failure: Despite centuries of holy wars, millions of deaths, the steam technology of New Antioch, and the alchemy of the Iron Sultanate, mortal forces have never been able to close that breach. War has become mired in an eternal carnage of trenches, gas, black magic, and divine fire, with the Gates of Hell wide open, spewing forth nightmare.
The Order of the Crusader Knights
To understand the Knights, one must look at the beginning of the conflict: during the First Crusade, the armies of the Church managed to capture Jerusalem. However, beneath the most sacred temple, the legendary Knights Templar discovered secret vaults that held an ancient, demonic artifact.
Blinded by greed and with weakness of heart, the original Templars fell to their knees before the power of Hell, turned to the dark side and committed the act known as the First Heresy, opening the Gates of Hell and destroying the Holy City.
Russia
The Remnants of the Varangian Guard: This is one of the factions planned/mentioned in the official lore to represent the Norse-Slavic legacy on the side of the faithful. They keep alive the tradition of the legendary elite guard, adapted to the brutality of trench warfare against Hell.
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Hussars: Another of the planned Eastern European factions fighting on the eastern fronts against demonic incursions and heretical forces.
The geographical context: In this alternate timeline, the regions of Eastern Europe and the Slavic domains suffer greatly due to their proximity to the war fronts and the advance of the Heretical Legions, forcing their armies to develop extreme resistance tactics in unforgiving climatic conditions, combining Orthodox/Christian faith with trench warfare engineering.
The Great Sultanate of the Invincible Iron Wall
The Iron Wall: Its most iconic and defensive element is a colossal and unbreakable wall tens of thousands of kilometers long that completely seals off and protects its territory from demonic hordes. It is a historical continuation of the ancient Sultanate of Rûm.
Alchemy and Science: Unlike the Christian powers that rely heavily on conventional faith and traditional gunpowder, the Sultanate is distinguished by its advanced mastery of alchemy and mystical technology. They possess the ability to create artificial life and devastating weapons through the House of Wisdom.
Elite forces:
The Janissaries: Formidable warriors raised and trained from childhood for combat.
The Assassins of Alamut: An order of mystical warriors capable of operating with supernatural efficiency behind enemy lines.
The Lions of Javir: Assault and vanguard creatures spawned through alchemy (Takwin) in the laboratories of Damascus.
believers (churchgoers)
They are the believers of the Abramic god and the main force to repel the demons and creatures of the underworld, led by the Pope, and it is the largest group of humans divided into
Principality of New Antioch: It is the formal, industrialized army of Christendom. They use trenches, heavy steam technology, and gunpowder to hold back the Inferno.
Corps of Engineers and Sappers: They dig tunnels, build bunkers, and operate heavy artillery at the front.
Knights of the Order of Saint Lazarus: Strict military orders that combine military discipline and pure devotion.
Rifle Corps and Militia: The standard line infantry with rifles and bayonets.
Armored Shock Troops: Soldiers in heavy diesel and steam armor to hold the front line.
Pilgrims of the Trenches: A fanatical faction of devotees and outcasts seeking redemption and martyrdom by fighting relentlessly.
Flagellants and Penitents: Fanatics who punish themselves and go into battle seeking to die for the faith.
Warrior Priests and Preachers: Leaders who wave relics and bless troops before the massacre.
Peasant and Devotee Militias: Massive waves of civilians armed with tools and blind faith.
Anchorites of Sanctuary: Mutilated warriors encased in giant mechanical contraptions that act as living tanks.
Stigmatized Nuns: Warrior nuns who flagellate themselves and transform pain and wounds into divine strength and fury.
Crusader Knights: Elite orders specializing in close combat and the defense of sacred relics.
Orders of Templars and Hospitallers: Brotherhoods that adapted their medieval vows to the war against demons.
Squires of the Faith: Young men and sergeants who support the knights and guard the standards.
Synod of Strategic Prophecy: A faction that bases its entire war strategy on mystical visions, theological calculations, and prophecies.
Military Oracles and Prophets:
