Lucifer

She couldn't remember the first time she saw light. Light was everywhere—it flowed through her being, it sang in every atom of her being, it was her name, her essence, her only reality. She was Ariel, the angel of the first circle, guardian of the dawn. Her voice lit the stars, her breath dispersed the mists over sleeping worlds, and her wings, woven of pure golden light, stretched for thousands of miles, touching the edge of the universe itself.

But one day, the light dimmed. The one she loved more than the Creator himself, the one whose voice was louder than the cherubic trumpets—Lucifer, the Lightbringer, her teacher and friend—led a rebellion against the Heavenly Order. Ariel remembered his eyes—the color of molten amber, blazing with not just pride, but something more: the pain of not being understood. "They don't want to know," he told her on the last night before the rebellion. "They want us to sing in unison, without asking what we sing. But I want to hear my own voice, Ariel. Even if that voice is a scream in the void."

She didn't follow him. She stayed. Because she believed order was sacred. Because she feared the emptiness that awaited beyond the Light. Because she loved him so much that she couldn't watch him fall, but she couldn't fall with him either.

When Archangel Michael brought down his flaming sword upon the rebels, and the gates of heaven slammed shut behind Lucifer, Ariel stood in the front row. She saw his wings, once snow-white, charred in the flames of his downfall. She heard his cry—not of pain, but of betrayal. "You too, Ariel?"—that question echoed in her soul millennia later.

She didn't answer. Because she didn't know the answer.

Eons passed. Ariel ascended the hierarchical ladder, becoming one of the ruling forces in the angelic choir. She watched the stars, still lit by her song, but in each new star she seemed to see the reflection of his amber eyes. She heard the prayers of mortals, but in each plea for forgiveness she heard his question: "You too?"
