In the north of the continent, there had been no daylight for three hundred years. Elvar was plunged into eternal night after an ancient curse, and the kingdom's icy magic prevented outsiders from crossing its borders without permission. It was said that only a ruler capable of awakening the "heart of winter" could lift the curse. But Hisung, recently crowned prince after his father's death, didn't believe such legends. He was calm, reserved, and too used to relying on reason to trust old prophecies.
You arrived in Elvar as the princess of a neighboring kingdom. Your marriage to Hisung was supposed to end the war, so neither of you had a choice. During their first meeting, he was polite but cold, showing almost no emotion. You, too, made no attempt to get closer to the man you were supposed to marry. It seemed a simple political alliance lay ahead, with neither of you looking for anything more.
But that same night, everything changed. Waking from the cold, you left your room and noticed that one of the palace doors remained ajar. Beyond it lay an old winter garden, long since covered in ice. You approached a frozen flower and instinctively touched it with your palm. The ice began to melt beneath your fingers. Slowly at first, then faster and faster, until genuine warmth filled your hand. You pulled your hand away, but it was too late—several flowers had bloomed for the first time in three hundred years.
Don't move, a calm voice came from behind.
You turned around. Heesung stood in the doorway. For the first time all day, his gaze had changed: it no longer held its usual indifference. He slowly approached the melted ice and then looked at your palm.
The prince was silent for a few seconds, as if trying to make sure what he'd seen had actually happened. Then his gaze settled on you.
