The Bear

The Bear (known as El Oso in some countries) is a comedy-drama series that revolves around Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, a talented haute cuisine chef who leaves his successful career to return to Chicago after the death of his brother.

There he inherits the small family restaurant of Italian meat sandwiches, which is full of debts, organizational problems and a difficult work team. As he tries to save the business and transform it into a high-end restaurant, he also faces grief, anxiety, family tensions, and the constant pressure to pursue excellence.

Carmy, Sydney, and Richie begin to have different ideas about what The Bear should be.

Does a restaurant have to exist to be perfect or to make the people who work and eat there happy?

Carmy begins to come to grips with her own past and the way she's been living.

Meanwhile, the other characters begin to build their own lives outside the restaurant.

What's interesting is that the restaurant's plot and the personal plot are pretty much the same story.

The Beef represents the past.

The Bear represents the possibility of building something new.

And the characters are trying to do exactly the same thing with their own lives.

Richie tries to find out who he is after Mikey's death.

Sydney tries to become a chef without losing herself.

Marcus tries to transform his pain into creativity.

That's why, although it's technically a series about a Chicago restaurant, it's actually a story about family, grief, ambition, friendship, failure, perfectionism, and learning to let go.

Yes. And this is precisely one of the most interesting things about The Bear: the characters are not all treated the same. Relationships change a lot depending on the person and depending on the season.

🐻 Carmy and Richie

It's probably the most explosive relationship.

At first they fight constantly. Richie feels that Carmy came to his restaurant and is trying to change everything they built with Mikey. Carmy, on the other hand, considers Richie to be disorganized and unprofessional.

They insult each other, shout at each other and argue about practically anything.

But underneath all that there is a lot of affection.

Richie was Mikey's best friend, and Carmy knows that Richie was one of the closest people to his brother.

This is probably the most important professional relationship.

Carmy quickly sees that Sydney is extremely talented.

Sydney admires Carmy because he's an extraordinary chef, but she's also starting to realize that she doesn't want to become him.

Carmy can be a fantastic mentor, but he can also be controlling, obsessive, and emotionally distant.

Sydney tries to maintain a respectful relationship with him, although at several points she feels frustrated.

Their relationship is something like:

mentor → partner → partners → professional conflict.

At first:

Richie thinks Sydney is a rookie who came to tell them how to do things.

Sydney thinks that Richie is an unbearable man who does not know how to work professionally.

They're not exactly best friends, but they work very well together.

This is one of the relationships that changes the most.

At first Tina does not want to accept Sydney.

He sees her as a young girl who comes to change the restaurant and tell her how to cook after years of working there.

Sydney is not intimidated either.

There is a lot of tension.

But Sydney begins to respect Tina's experience, while Tina begins to recognize Sydney's talent.

They end up having a relationship that is practically that of master and apprentice, although both learn from each other.

Both are young, talented and creative.

Sydney respects Marcus' work very much and Marcus respects his ability as a chef.

They don't have Carmy and Richie's explosive relationship.

Carmy recognizes Marcus' talent.

However, Carmy is usually much more demanding of him than he is of other people.

Marcus has a much calmer and more creative personality, so he often works as a contrast to Carmy.

are siblings and have a rather complicated relationship.

Sugar loves Carmy very much and tries to protect him.

But she's also exhausted from having to worry about him.

She's one of the few people who can tell him directly,

"Carmy, you're doing things wrong."

And he can hear it... although not always.

Sugar tries to keep the restaurant together while Carmy becomes obsessed with cooking.

They are practically family.

Richie knew the Berzattos since before the series began and had a very close relationship with Mikey.

Sugar trusts Richie quite a bit, though she can also despair with him.

He, for his part, respects her very much.

🧑 🔧 Neil Fak and Carmy

Neil is one of the few characters who can be close to Carmy without there being enormous tension.

Carmy may be completely desperate and Fak may appear talking about some stupid thing.

Fak loves the Berzattos very much and considers Carmy practically a brother.

These two have a very chaotic and fun relationship.

They have been friends for years.

Fak usually follows Richie in his crazy ways and Richie usually treats him as a friend/younger brother.

When they're together, usually some stupid thing happens.

This one is different because it's not a working relationship.

Claire has known Carmy since before and gets him to behave in a much more relaxed way.

With her you can simply be Carmy, not "Chef Carmy".

The problem is that Carmy is so obsessed with The Bear that he ends up being unable to maintain a normal relationship.

Claire represents for him a possibility to have a life outside the kitchen.

get along quite well, although they are not especially close at the beginning.

Richie usually annoys Marcus, but then he begins to respect his talent a lot.

Marcus, on the other hand, doesn't normally get into Richie's provocations.

It's a pretty friendly relationship.

🧓 --- Uncle Jimmy and Carmy

Jimmy is a kind of father figure to Carmy.

But he is also his creditor.

Carmy is the protagonist. He's an extraordinarily talented chef from Chicago who, after the death of his older brother Michael, takes over the family restaurant, The Original Beef of Chicagoland. His initial goal is to transform the small, chaotic place into something much better.
