But then, during one meeting, Benjamin (more on him later) falsely declared him a "traitor," and since Benjamin was influential on the ship, no one argued with him. William's father was thrown overboard, and Benjamin began raising him on his own, turning him into "his own kind," which is why William became so cruel.
