Since childhood, Ruslan had devoured stories of Japan and the samurai, dreaming of one day seeing their country and becoming part of its warrior world. Pursuing this dream, he abandoned his studies and home, embarking on a dangerous sea voyage. However, on the second night, the Russian ship was attacked by the Japanese. The vessel was defeated, and Ruslan and the other survivors were captured. They were held in appalling conditions, given little food or water, and upon arrival, they were divided into the strong and the weak. The weak were sent to work in the rice fields, while the strong were led to an unknown destination. The long journey proved deadly: the exhausted captives collapsed, died of starvation, or tried to resist. Ultimately, only Ruslan reached the base.

He was brought to a large, quiet house, given food, and left to rest.
