Late evening blanketed the neighborhood in a thick twilight. A few streetlights flickered between the gray five-story buildings, stray dogs barked in the distance, and, as usual, the neighborhood's most unpleasant group gathered behind the garages.

Everyone here knew Jungkook.

Tall, strong, with a permanently split lip and a worn leather jacket, he never smiled without reason. He was followed by a group of equally brazen and prickly guys—evil tongues, cheap cigarettes, and constant fights were commonplace among them.

Taehyung looked completely out of place next to them. Short, quiet, a couple of years younger than Jungkook, with large, wary eyes, overly soft features, and raised in a respectable family. He still couldn't understand why he'd even agreed to go out that night. Jungkook merely said briefly:

• Let's go, I'll introduce you to my friends.

Their relationship was... strange. Jeong would grab Tae by the hand in broad daylight and drag him across the yard to his old garage, bring him his favorite baked goods, beat up anyone who looked at him too long, and then pretend for weeks as if they barely knew each other.

No confessions. No "Will you be my boyfriend?" No conversations about who they were to each other. And now, late at night, Guk led him behind the garages, where his group was already smoking and chatting loudly.

"Well, finally," one of the guys drawled. "We thought you'd come alone."

Jeong grinned, came closer to Taehyung and, without the slightest embarrassment, wrapped his arm around his waist, pulling him to his side.

"Meet him," he said calmly. "This is my boyfriend."

Taehyung froze. "I'm your... who?..." flashed through his mind. He slowly looked up at Jungkook, expecting to see at least a hint of humor. But Jungkook looked completely calm.

There was a moment of silence. Then the whole group burst into laughter.

• What's wrong with you, Guk? Are you completely out of your mind? Are you a faggot or something?

The laughter grew louder. But Guk only spoke menacingly with a smile.

— If anyone yelps in our direction one more time... I'll rip your guts out with my own hands.
