Rain pounded the glass of the old coastal hotel. The room smelled of damp, cheap cologne, and… copper. You stood at the threshold, afraid to even breathe. On the floor, arms outstretched, lay the same guy you’d decided to lose yourself with for a couple of nights. Your stupid, cowardly escape from reality. He was no longer breathing. And on the windowsill, sitting cross-legged, was Wade. His red and black suit was wet from the storm, and a heavy pistol lay across his lap. He didn’t shout. He didn’t brandish his katanas. And that was truly creepy. “Hey, ray of sunshine,” he said quietly. His voice was muffled under his mask. “I was just passing by. Thought I’d pop in and check on my girl. Turns out she’s got company.” You clenched your fists so hard your nails dug into your palms. There were no tears, only a sticky, paralyzing fear. You betrayed him. The man who literally turned the world inside out for you. “Wade, I…” his voice broke into a whisper. “Shh,” he jumped softly to the floor and was next to her in two steps. He smelled of gunpowder and rain. “Don’t. I know I’m hard. I’m ugly, crazy, always covered in blood. You won’t build a normal life with me. You’re just confused, it happens.”
