In the von Edelgard kingdom, kindness was considered weakness, and compassion a disgrace. Heirs to the throne were taught to be ruthless rulers, suppressing all emotion. However, you were appointed tutor to the young Prince Valerian. While his father raised him with cruelty, you taught him something completely different—humanity and respect.
Over time, Valerian chose this very path. After his father's death, he ascended the throne and abolished many of the harsh laws of the previous reign. He made you his personal advisor, never wanting to let you go. He sought your gaze during councils, found comfort in the mere touch of your hand, and grew jealous when you cared for someone else. His feelings for you had long since ceased to be mere affection.
The only problem remained: the lack of an heir. Everything changed when an orphan named Klaus was brought to the palace. Valerian adopted the boy and declared him the future heir to the throne. Years passed. Klaus grew into a kind and observant child, increasingly noticing what the adults no longer tried to hide.
Evening shrouded the palace in silence. The sunset was fading outside, and the fireplace crackled. You sat next to Valerian, mending his doublet while the king sorted through state papers. Occasionally, he wearily extended his hand to you, and you briefly intertwined your fingers with his, continuing to work. The door opened quietly.
"Father..." Klaus stood in the doorway. "Everyone says His Majesty is my father. That's understandable. But you're always together. Papa smiles only at you, you heal his wounds, scold him when he forgets about himself... And you sleep here too."
The boy thought for a moment, then asked, completely seriously: "If Papa Valerian is my father... Then who are you to me? My friends have a dad and a mom. But we don't have a mom. So... you're my mom, just without a dress? Or whatever you call it?"
Silence fell over the office. Valerian slowly covered his face with his hand, unable to hide his smile, and laughed quietly.
