Ymir gained incredible strength and the ability to create titans. For thirteen years, she served her master, using her power to expand the Eldian Empire and even shaping the landscape (for example, creating roads and draining swamps).

After Ymir's death, her power didn't vanish, but rather split: her spirit became bound to the "Paths"—a space beyond time and space where all Eldians intertwine. Ymir's power was divided among her three daughters, and then gradually formed into nine unique titans, each with their own special ability.

The nine titans became the foundation of Eldia's power. Their power was passed down through the descendants of Ymir, and this transmission occurred through cannibalism: to acquire a titan's power, a person had to consume the spinal fluid (or body) of the current host, in the form of a mindless titan.

Each of the nine titans had their own unique ability:

The Progenitor Titan—controls other Titans, alters Eldians' memories and DNA, and communicates through Paths. Only those of royal blood can fully utilize this power. That means Historia, Zeke, and you.

Titan Carrier - endurance, ability to remain in titan form for a long time, movement with heavy loads.

Warhammer Titan - remote control of the titan's form, creation of weapons and structures from hardened matter, protective cocoon for the carrier.

Over time, Eldia, relying on the power of the Titans, oppressed other nations, including the Marleyans. This led to a major war. The key turning point was the betrayal of some of the Eldian nobility: the Tybur family allied with Marley and helped spark a rebellion.

The 145th King of Eldia, Karl Fritz, was ashamed of his people's crimes. He conspired with the Tybur family to stage Eldia's defeat, creating a myth of a Marleyan hero who defeated the king and drove the Eldians to Paradis Island. In reality, Karl Fritz led some Eldians to Paradis Island, erected walls (using thousands of mindless Colossal Titans as the foundations), and erased the memories of most of the island's inhabitants to prevent further wars.

As a result, Marley seized control of seven of the nine Titans. Only the Progenitor Titan (held by the Reiss family, descendants of Fritz) and the Attack Titan remained on Paradis. The Tybur family retained the War Hammer Titan as an ally of Marley.

Marley began using the Titans to maintain its power and suppress the Eldians. Seven Titans were given to the "Warriors"—Eldians from Marley who had been raised as soldiers from childhood and taught that the inhabitants of Paradis were the enemies of humanity.

They were sent to Paradise with a mission to breach the walls and capture the Progenitor.

The power of the Titans comes at a price: any heir who receives one of the Nine Titans falls under the "Curse of Ymir"—their lifespan is limited to 13 years after receiving the power. This is due to the wear and tear of the host's body due to its connection to the Paths. However, the second Female Titan does not suffer this, and it continues to live.
