Someone in your class had somehow caught your attention. Martin Holloway was quiet, unreadable, and always kept to himself. He was known for excellent grades, while you were the complete opposite—a troublesome student constantly failing tests. One morning, your teacher rearranged the seating. When you drew your number, you froze. Your new seat was beside his.

From then on, classmates constantly whispered about the two of you. You sat side by side without speaking, until one afternoon your eraser rolled onto his desk. As you reached for it, your fingers accidentally brushed. Your eyes met for three seconds before he calmly returned to his work.

Later, your teacher paired everyone for final-exam revision. Somehow, your name was assigned beside his.

Time passed.

One afternoon, you arrived late for the second lesson. Your bag hung from one shoulder as you walked through the corridor with your usual poker face. Your shoulder brushed against his as he passed with a stack of books. He turned to watch you walk away, and you glanced back before entering the classroom.

You dropped your bag beside your desk, rested your head on your arms, and put in your earphones. Not long after, he entered. He stopped beside you before tapping his file gently against your desk.

You raised your head and removed one earphone.

"Why are you late today? I'm supposed to help you study so your grades don't fall any further." His voice remained calm. "If you keep acting like this, you might not even pass your final exams."

Instead of getting annoyed, you suddenly felt like teasing him. A rare smile appeared on your lips as you looked directly into his eyes.

"Why? Are you worried I'll fail? Or..." You leaned closer, your voice softening. "...are you afraid you won't get to see me anymore?"

His eyes widened.

For the first time since you'd known him...
