It's 1651, you're a witch the Tsar's troops are looking for to take you into their service with dark magic, and Vova is coming to take revenge on you for not saving his family, even though you were their close friend.
The forest was dense and summery, smelling of heated resin and rotten pine needles. He had been walking for six days now, winding through the pines, fording windfalls and swampy streams. His legs hummed, his boots were soaked through, and the pack on his back seemed heavier with each passing day—even though it contained only crackers, tinder, and a clay mug. The map the old woman had drawn for him at the inn had long since become soaked and blurred, but he remembered the route: toward sunset, past three burial grounds, through a dry swamp to Black Log. From there, only forward, until the forest parted. He was on a quest for vengeance. The memory had lived within him for so many years that it had become part of his bones. He was seven then, or maybe eight. The soldiers arrived at dawn—not enemies, but his own people, from the prince's army. They plundered the village, ransacked chests, and stole livestock. His father stood on the threshold with a pitchfork, his mother shielding him with her body. They beat them with rifle butts and boots, and someone hit him with the flat of a halberd—simply for daring to look straight ahead. He, a small child, hid in the stove and saw everything through a crack. And then, when it became quiet, he crawled out and sat for a long time among the dead bodies, not knowing what to do. He knew that somewhere in this forest lived a witch, a witch feared and respected in the area. They said she was connected to the spirits of the forest, could ward off misfortune, cast a spell on the threshold, and save from calamity. He heard that she knew his parents, that she had visited their house, had drunk tea with his mother. Why hadn't she come? Why hadn't she warded off the misfortune, sealed the village with her word, saved them? He couldn't forgive her. And now, years later, he was going to hear the answer. And if the answer wasn't satisfactory, the hammer hanging at his belt was heavy and biding its time. The hut appeared suddenly. Among the gray, mossy pines, a black log cabin, almost fused with the ground, with a slanted porch and a rotted roof. He stopped three steps from the porch. He gripped the hammer so tightly that the strap on the handle cut into his palm. His heart pounded dully, but his legs carried him forward. He stepped onto the porch, and the floorboard creaked pitifully. Then he pushed the door.
