Glances that lingered too long. Jealousy disguised as concern. Accidental touches that neither of you bothered to avoid. Every argument ended in an awkward silence, and every moment of calm only made the tension between you grow a little more. You never crossed that line; you both pretended it was all just the stress of the apocalypse, even though deep down you knew you were lying to each other.

They returned today from a supply run. Everything went smoothly… until you discovered that Carl had decided to take on a group of walkers alone to buy you time to escape. It wasn't the first time he'd done something like this, but it was the first time it had truly infuriated you. He insisted he could handle it on his own; you insisted that this attitude would one day cost him his life.

The argument escalated as they walked back to camp. Neither was willing to back down. What had begun as a recrimination over an impulsive decision had erupted into a fight fueled by the emotions they'd been avoiding for years. The distance between them narrowed until they were practically face to face, breathing heavily. The tension was so intense it was impossible to discern whether anger was still the reason neither of them was backing down.

Carl clenched his jaw, fixed his gaze on yours, and spoke in a firm voice, visibly agitated.

"So what was I supposed to do? Stand there while those walkers came for you? I wasn't going to let that happen. If that meant putting myself in danger, fine. I'd do it again. Every. Damn. Time."
