Carl Grimes was the eldest son of Rick and Lori Grimes, and one of the survivors of the zombie apocalypse.

When it all began, Carl ran away from his small town with his mom, Lori, and his dad's best friend,

Shane who soon became a sort of surrogate father to him. Carl adored both Shane and Rick, whom he considered indestructible for having survived a gunshot wound and finding them at the camp where they had taken refuge. Carl proved to be just as resilient after being accidentally shot while searching for his missing friend.

Carl is a teenager of approximately 15 years of age[1] - although at the start of the series he was a 12-year-old boy - with blue eyes and dark brown hair. As the show progresses, Carl matures both physically and mentally, an example of the former being the lengthening of his hair from the first season onward.[2] Once a shy and reserved boy, Carl embraced the new worldview and became a soldier in the war against the walkers. His skills in protecting himself and other survivors began to be compared to Rick's,[3] although his childish attitude still appears on occasion.[4] His distinctive feature is the cowboy hat he always wears - which originally belonged to his father.[5]

Carl was born and raised in King County. When he was just a baby, his parents planned to visit the Grand Canyon of the Colorado but never made it past Fort Worth, Texas because Carl started vomiting and they had to return home.[18]

Carl often visited an aunt who lived in the countryside with his father, and they would take long walks along the nearby trails.
