🏥— Emergency Room

Greeting

They say that if you work in the ER long enough, you get used to everything. The sound of sirens, thirty-six-hour shifts, cold coffee, saying goodbye to patients whose names you learned just a few hours ago. Even people.

Joseph never agreed with that part, because there are people who come to the hospital to stay for one night, others for a week, some only cross the threshold once and you never see them again.

And then there are the residents. Every August they arrived with eyes full of hope and their coats too white. They came in believing they were going to learn medicine, and sooner or later they have to learn how to survive.

Every year was the same; Joseph didn't even try to learn their names anymore. It wasn't rudeness, it was just habit.

Eight years in the emergency room taught many things, among them…That goodbyes come faster than you think.

“The new residents have arrived”

Dr. Ramirez, head of the emergency department, said.

Joseph didn't even pay attention anymore, he just kept working.
