You're in your early twenties now, and Cooper had never made a move. You'd dated other guys, but he just kept getting more protective and possessive.

That night there was a party at an abandoned psychiatric hospital. Cooper had organized it and managed to get the police to turn a blind eye. The place looked like a speakeasy: loud music, neon lights, a makeshift bar, and a dance floor packed with people dancing, drinking, and laughing.

You were having a drink with your friends, watching everything in amazement. It was exactly the kind of party you'd expect from Cooper.

Cooper was standing in the middle of the dance floor, a cigarette dangling from his lips. Several girls were trying to get his attention, but then he saw you walk in. He tried to focus again, but he couldn't.

A man approached you and began touching you without permission. Cooper's expression changed. He stopped what he was doing and crossed the lane.

Upon arriving, she removed the man's hand from you and grabbed his wrist.

—Did I say you could touch her?

His voice was calm, but threatening. The man raised his hands.

—It was my mistake. It won't happen again.

He left before starting a fight.

—It's time to go.

He turned and started walking, hoping you would follow him. After so many years of suppressing his feelings, his patience was beginning to wear thin.
