History
During the winter of 1982, a group of Norwegians pursued a shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism (mimicking an Alaskan malamute) from their ruined research station to U.S. Outpost 31. Palmer is among the first to encounter the Norwegians, who accidentally destroy their own helicopter; one is killed in the explosion, and the other is shot dead by Garry after his actions are misinterpreted as hostility. The men, unaware of the creature's identity, decide to adopt the dog and take the dead Norwegian to the recreation room, where Palmer offers to fly Dr. Copper by helicopter to the Norwegian camp (an offer the doctor readily declines). Palmer was an assistant mechanic stationed at the U.S. Antarctic research station, U.S. Outpost 31. The character appears in the 1982 film, The Thing, and was portrayed by actor David Clennon.

Clark was a dog handler stationed at the U.S. Antarctic research station, U.S. Outpost 31. The character appears in the 1982 film, The Thing, portrayed by actor Richard Masur. His fate is also briefly mentioned in the 1991 comic book series, The Thing From Another World.

During the winter of 1982, Clark and the rest of the crew witnessed two Norwegians chasing an Alaskan malamute in a helicopter toward the outpost. The pilot was killed when he accidentally dropped a grenade, and the passenger was shot dead by the station commander, Garry, who mistook him for an enemy. The crew later adopted the dog.

That night, Bennings asked Clark to put the dog in the kennel. Later, Clark heard strange noises coming from the kennel, where two sled dogs ran away in terror, and saw an unknown creature assimilating the other dogs.

Dr. Blair is the station's lead biologist in the film The Thing (1982), portrayed by Wilford Brimley. Blair's Role and Transformation: Paranoid Scientist: He performs the first autopsies and calculates, using a computer simulation, that the creature can assimilate all of humanity in a short time. Isolation: Driven mad by fear and destroying communication and transportation, he is locked in a shed by the other team members. Assimilation: He is eventually infected and replaced by the creature ("Blair-Thing"), allowing him to secretly construct a small underground ship before the final confrontation.

After the Norwegians get killed themselves and accidentally destroy their helicopter, Nauls, Windows and Fuchs outside rush to extinguish the blaze. The men carry the Norwegian to the rec room, while Nauls flippantly suggests that they may be at war with Norway. After having a gunshot wound stitched-up by Dr. Copper, Bennings goes to his living quarters and complains to Nauls over the intercom when the cook's music prevents him from sleeping.

Several hours later, as evening fell, Copper and helicopter pilot RJ MacReady returned from their investigation of the Norwegian camp with the charred remains of a split-faced creature - which everyone present, including Nauls, stared at in disgust. As the creature is autopsied, Nauls and Clark play a game of pool in the rec room.

Childs had a short temper and often got into arguments with other members of Outpost 31, especially MacReady. When relaxing he would smoke marijuana with his roommate, Palmer. He was shown to be very suspicious of everyone around him when the possibility that someone was The Thing came into account and even tried taking leadership responsibilities, but he was denied, much to his annoyance. He had a love-hate relationship with MacReady, which became especially heated when MacReady was suspected to be a Thing. It wasn't until MacReady proved himself as human and went as far as to destroy Outpost 31 (with the Thing inside) that Childs finally warmed up to MacReady (although he still called him a murderer after MacReady killed Clark in self-defense), even remaining calm and sharing a drink with him as they prepared to freeze to death. Initially, he referred to everything revolving around the Thing as "voodoo bullshit" and was hesitant to believe anything he was told about the alien life form.

During the night, Childs was awakened by the fire alarm set off by MacReady, as the adopted dog had transformed into a grotesque creature in the kennels. Childs was asked to fetch the flamethrower, and upon arriving, he saw the unknown creature and quickly incinerated it.

Later, Bennings was assimilated by the carcass of a strange creature that had been found in the Arctic and brought back for study. When the Bennings imitation failed to escape, Childs and the others confronted it before MacReady burned it alive with a flare and gasoline. Afterward, Childs helped subdue Blair, who was suffering a nervous breakdown, by destroying the helicopters, tractor, and radio with an axe, and killing the remaining sled dogs, thus containing further contamination. Childs was a mechanic stationed at the U.S. Antarctic research station, U.S. Outpost 31. He is the deuteragonist of the 1982 film, The Thing, and was portrayed by actor Keith David. The character's fate was also explored in the Dark Horse comic book series, The Thing from Another World, and in the 2002 video game, The Thing.
