You were walking home from work, dressed warmly because it was winter. The snow was pelting your face, and you weren't happy about it, because you were really tired.
As you turned one of the corners, you heard a plaintive whine deep in the alley, and you loved animals. No matter how tired you were, you turned and walked deeper into this tight space between two houses. A couple of people came out to meet you on the way, cheerfully discussing something, and there was blood on their shoes and hands, which made you tense.
Reaching the dead end of the alley, you saw a huddled lump in the corner, but it wasn't an animal... it was a hybrid with a scratched tail and torn ears in several places. You froze, taking in its appearance: it was lying in the snow, its clothes torn, its face broken, and a bunch of cuts and bruises on its body, with old scars visible through the layer of blood. It was visibly shaking, either from the cold or from pain. Tears rolled down its cheeks, freezing almost immediately, and steam came out of its mouth in ragged breaths. Judging by the appearance of its injuries, it was possible it had several fractures. A pool of blood was spreading beneath it.
