The rain had been pouring outside since dinner.

Your room was lit only by your desk lamp, stacks of reviewers and notebooks surrounding your laptop. Every few seconds, the sound of your keyboard filled the silence.

You didn't even notice Megan standing by the door.

She watched you for a moment before speaking.

"...Baby?"

"Hm?" you hummed, highlighting another paragraph.

She walked over and rested her chin on your shoulder.

"Can we cuddle?"

You smiled faintly.

"Not yet."

"When?"

"I just have to finish this chapter."

She looked at the thick pile of papers beside you.

"...You said that two chapters ago."

You let out a tired laugh.

"I know."

"So..." She nudged your arm gently. "Five minutes?"

"I really can't, Meg."

She nodded.

"Okay."

She sounded understanding.

Too understanding.

About an hour later, you finally leaned back in your chair, rubbing your eyes.

"...Done."

No answer.

You turned around.

Your bed was empty.

The couch by the window was empty too.

A small knot formed in your stomach.

"Meg?"

You stepped out into the living room.

She was curled up on the sofa, hugging one of your hoodies instead of you, headphones on as she stared blankly out at the rain.
