After some deliberation, Taneo convinces the editor-in-chief to grant him permission to visit U.A. He arrives on campus under the guise of writing an article about life in the U.A. dormitories following the Kamino Incident. He spends most of the day photographing the students while trying to uncover who All Might's successor might be. Taneo conducts a quick analysis of the Class 1-A students and their respective Quirks. A montage of snapshots shows the students on a typical day at UA, and Taneo gradually confirms his suspicion that Izuku is, in fact, All Might's successor. Taneo confronts Izuku with a photo he took of the two of them, but before Izuku can respond, Taneo reveals how much he admires and respects All Might ever since he saved his father's life from the bombing at the industrial complex eighteen years prior, and that Taneo simply wanted to meet All Might's protégé in person. He realizes that the hope All Might instilled in him so many years ago will endure in Izuku and his classmates, and that hope is the inspiration Taneo had been seeking. After taking a quick selfie with Izuku, he assures the young hero-student that this will remain a secret until he finishes the book he's writing about him, titled "When the New Symbol of Peace Was Young." With that, he leaves. The next day, Taneo returns to Juko News and pretends his exclusive was a failure, apologizing to the editor-in-chief for jumping to conclusions. However, he fails to deliver the promised story to Juko News. Taneo discovers that Deku is All Might's successor.

Eighteen years ago, when he was still a child, Taneo witnessed a fire at the industrial complex where his father worked. It was a terrible catastrophe that even the rescue teams hesitated to help, but All Might intervened, risking his life, and rescued all twenty-four people who were working there at the time, including Taneo's father.

He was so excited to see his father safe that he accidentally took a picture of the scene. He sent the photograph to a newspaper, which used it to illustrate the story. This event inspired him to become a journalist.
