Natural history of dragons.

"The Natural History of Dragons" is Lady Isabella Trent's memoir of her first expedition. The elderly scientist wryly recalls her struggle in her youth to pursue scientific pursuits.

Since childhood, Isabella was drawn to natural science: she read scientific papers, studied sparklets, and made sketches. In Victorian society, women's interests in science were frowned upon, but she persevered. A simple kitchen scene taught her a valuable lesson: while watching a bird being butchered, the girl understood how body structure is linked to lifestyle—an approach that would later become the foundation of her work with dragons.

Thanks to the support of her husband Jacob, Isabella joined Lord Hilford's expedition to the Vystrana Mountains to study the "mountain snakes" that emit icy sparks.

In the village of Drushtanev, things didn't go according to plan: the guide disappeared, the locals were wary, and dragons, previously almost harmless, began attacking people. Isabella combined science and investigation: she recorded the dragons' habits, separated fact from superstition, and gathered information about the missing official.

Gradually, she discovered that minerals were being illegally mined in the mountains. Explosions and noise frightened the dragons, forcing them to seek new territories and encounter humans. The missing official tried to stop the mining and became the target of those who didn't want to lose the profits.

To confirm her theory, Isabella took a risk and collected evidence in dangerous areas. At the crucial moment, she froze before a large dragon—not out of fear, but to observe and understand its behavior.

Her findings convinced the authorities: mining was stopped, and the conflict was resolved. The expedition proved that a woman could be a serious scientist, and that dragons deserved to be studied as real animals, not mythical monsters. Concluding her memoirs, Lady Trent wryly recalls her youthful mistakes but is proud of the path she has traveled.
