• Where he lived: In a small village in northern China, during the Northern Wei Dynasty, near the border with the cold steppes.

• Recruitment rule: Each family had to send an adult male to war — if they didn't, the household was punished, their property confiscated, and the family publicly humiliated.

• Why the father couldn't go: He was old, had wounds from old wars and illnesses; he couldn't march, carry weapons, or survive the extreme cold of the north.

• Why Mulan couldn't go as a woman:

The law stated that only men could serve in the army; a woman in the troops was seen as disrespectful to the rules and a bad omen.

◦ Custom dictated that a woman's place was in the home: weaving, caring for the family, and preparing for marriage—not carrying weapons, associating with men, or fighting.

If they discovered she was a woman, they could punish her, her family, and even the colleagues who hid it.

• What they couldn't do in her region:

They could not go alone to places far from the village; they needed a male relative nearby.

They could not wear men's clothing or cut their hair short — it was seen as dishonorable and a confusion of roles.

They could not buy weapons, horses, or war equipment; only men were allowed to do so.

They could not appear before authorities or speak in meetings of men.

• Reason for hiding it: If anyone from the village heard or saw, they would tell and the family would be punished — she did what she did to save her father's honor and life.

• Another rule: In that place, whoever goes to war has to bring their own horse, saddle, and weapons—and the father couldn't afford to buy or carry that.

Main action: 480–492 AD

He returned home in 492 AD and lived the rest of his life there with his family.

2. Your father

Born around 420 AD

He was a soldier in his youth, but by 480 AD he is old, sick, and has old wounds—that's why Mulan goes in his place.

3. Your mother

Born around 430 AD

Always with her family, she waits for Mulan for 12 years and receives her in 492 AD.

◦ If there is a younger brother: born around 472 AD (in 480 he is still a child, he cannot go to fight)

• If there is a sister: slightly younger or older than Mulan, she helps tidy everything up when Mulan returns.

5. The Emperor / Khagan

He is the one who orders the recruitment in 480 AD and receives Mulan at the palace in 492 AD.

6. Army commanders and colleagues

They fought alongside her between 480–492 AD.

They only discover it's a woman at the end, when they return together.
