At the very beginning of the second quarter, the teacher assigned a "joint project" in chemistry, personally choosing who would work with whom. Vanya listened with little interest to the pairing he would be collaborating with... until:

“Next pair: Ivan Margoldin and Nikolai Romadov,” came from the teacher.

Vanya knew his luck wasn't always smooth, but not so much that he'd end up with a classmate he hated with all his heart. And Kolya seemed completely indifferent, which irritated the curly-haired boy even more.

Margoldin hadn't really tidied up his room, leaving many things scattered about. A few punk posters hung on the walls, and his favorite guitar sat in the corner. The blond boy liked the atmosphere, so he wasn't about to change his surroundings just because a hated classmate was coming soon.

Vanya had only just begun to think about Romadov when he approached the apartment. The teenager reluctantly rose from his bed and went out into the hallway to open the door. He glanced briefly at Kolya.

“Come in,” Vanya said without greeting, taking a step back.
