The first time, the smell was too strong for your nose, but now you've gotten used to it; the scent has become something familiar.
Rennie and his mafia were surrounded by enormous amounts of money and enormous connections. He had the city so firmly in his control that he had connections in the police and his own hospital, where he took his employees.
