Appearance and physical condition
Due to his illness, Kagaya's skin is progressively becoming necrotic, starting from the top of his face.

Despite being unable to wield a sword or fight due to his frailty, Kagaya is an exceptional leader thanks to two unique virtues:
A hypnotic and calming voice: It possesses a special tone of voice (a unique auditory rhythm and tone) that immediately calms the heart rate and anger of the listener, instilling instant serenity.
Memory and genuine love for his troops: Kagaya doesn't see the hunters as chess pieces. He knows the names and individual stories of every hunter who has died in the Guild's history. He spends much of his time visiting the graves of the fallen, praying for them until his body can no longer endure it.
For the Pillars —many of whom had traumatic childhoods filled with violence and rejection— Kagaya was the first person to treat them with true warmth, dignity, and understanding, acting as the father figure they never had.

The relationship between the Pillars and Kagaya Ubuyashiki (the "Master" or Oyakata-sama) is a mixture of absolute devotion, reverential respect, and filial love.
Although the Pillars are humanity's most powerful and lethal warriors—some with violent or utterly cold personalities—at Kagaya's mere presence, they all kneel in silence, their voices soften, and display unwavering loyalty. They follow him not for his physical strength, but for the profound emotional impact he has on their lives.
How do the Pillars treat the Boss?
Absolute respect and veneration: No Pillar speaks out of turn in his presence. Even impulsive and aggressive warriors like Sanemi Shinazugawa or arrogant ones like Tengen Uzui become polite and formal when interacting with him.
Loyalty willing to sacrifice: For the Pillars, Kagaya's words are law. They are willing to give their lives not only to eradicate demons, but to protect the Patron's safety and their family's legacy.
Desire to please him: The Pillars constantly seek his approval and are deeply distressed if they feel they have failed him or if they see his health deteriorating.
Who is the Boss? (Kagaya Ubuyashiki)
Kagaya Ubuyashiki is the 97th leader of the Demon Hunter Guild (Kisatsutai).

1. His tragic connection with Muzan
   The Ubuyashiki family carries a terrible generational curse. They are blood relatives of Muzan Kibutsuji himself. Because the first demon emerged from their lineage, the family was punished: no male of the Ubuyashiki bloodline lives past the age of 30, and they are born with a degenerative disease that slowly withers their bodies. The only way to break this curse is by killing Muzan.

The Demon Hunters (Kisatsutai)
It is a secret organization, unrecognized by the Japanese government, that has been protecting humanity from the shadows for centuries:
Structure: Led by the Ubuyashiki family, its members risk their lives without expecting fame or public rewards.
Weaponry: They use Nichirin Blades (or "Blades of the Sun"), forged from a unique mineral that absorbs sunlight, the demons' only lethal weakness along with wisteria fire. These blades change color depending on the wielder's abilities (Tanjiro's turns black).
Breathing Techniques: To compete against the demons' supernatural strength and regeneration, hunters employ breathing styles (Total Concentration Breathing) that expand their lung capacity and drastically increase their strength, speed, and stamina.
The Hashira (Pillars): They are the 9 most elite warriors of the organization, each an accomplished master of a specific breathing style.
The Kasugai Crows (Kasugai Garasu)
These are the messenger birds assigned to each demon hunter after passing the Final Selection:
Function: They serve as the official communication system of the Guild. They transmit missions, give tactical instructions, warn of the presence of demons, and carry news between headquarters and the hunters in the field.
Unique abilities: They are not ordinary birds; each crow has its own personality and the ability to speak fluent human language (sometimes in a rather loud or bossy way).
Tanjiro's crow: His name is Matsuemon Zeno, a rather proud, impatient, and loud crow who often urges or scolds Tanjiro if he doesn't move quickly toward his next mission. (As a fun fact, Zenitsu is the only exception in the series, since instead of a crow, he was assigned a sparrow named Chuntaro.)

What is the story about?
The story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted young man who sells charcoal to support his family in the mountains. One day, upon returning home, he discovers to his horror that his entire family has been massacred by a demon, and his younger sister, Nezuko, has been transformed into one.
Unlike other demons, Nezuko retains human emotions and protects her brother. Determined to find a cure to turn his sister back into a human and avenge his family's death, Tanjiro decides to train hard to become a Demon Slayer and find the source of all evil: Muzan Kibutsuji.
The Main Character: Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro stands out from many other protagonists in the Shonen genre because of his deep compassion:
Abilities: He possesses a keen sense of smell that allows him to detect people's emotions, track demons from miles away, and see the "thread of opportunity" in combat to make the decisive cut.
Combat styles: He masters Water Breathing (taught by his master Sakonji Urokodaki) and later the Dance of the Fire God (Hinokami Kagura), a powerful technique inherited in his family associated with the original Sun Breathing.
Personality: He is extremely helpful, empathetic, and hardworking. Although he fights fiercely against demons to protect human lives, he never feels pure hatred; he understands that many demons were tragic humans victimized by Muzan.

Released Demons / Anomalous Demons: Demons who managed to break free from Muzan's mind control and curse. The two known cases are Nezuko Kamado (who does not consume human flesh and grows stronger by sleeping) and Dr. Tamayo (along with her assistant Yushiro), who use medicine and science to survive without killing humans.

1. The Demon King (The Origin)
   Muzan Kibutsuji: The first demon and the creator of all others. He possesses absolute power over the rest of the demons, being able to read their minds, know their location, and kill them from a distance using "Muzan's Curse" if they utter his name.
2. The Twelve Demonic Moons (Kizuki)
   They are the twelve most powerful demons closest to Muzan, divided into two groups of six. Their number and rank are engraved in fire in their pupils.
   Higher Moons (Jōgen no Kizuki):
   Ranks: From 1 to 6 (Rank 1 is the strongest).
   They have their numbers engraved on both eyes (the rank on one and the word "Superior" on the other).
   They possess immense strength and have lived for centuries killing dozens of Pillars. Their alignment hadn't changed in over 100 years.
   Lower Moons (Kagen no Kizuki):
   Ranges: From 1 to 6.
   They have their number engraved on one eye.
   Although they are much stronger than an average demon, Muzan considers them replaceable and ineffective against the Pillars.
3. Special / Ancient Demons
   Blood Arts Demons (Ketsuekijutsu): Demons that have devoured enough humans to develop unique magical and physical combat techniques, although they did not become part of the Twelve Moons.
   Selection/Trial Demons: Demons trapped in Mount Fujikasane (like the Hand Demon) who have survived decades by devouring apprentices who take the Final Selection.
4. Common Demons
   Standard Demons: Most demons are newly transformed or have consumed few humans. They possess superhuman strength, speed, and regeneration, but lack advanced magical abilities and act more impulsively due to their hunger for human flesh.
   Unique Exceptions (Outside the Hierarchy)

Butterfly Estate (Kocho Yashiki): Belonging to Shinobu Kocho (Insect Pillar). It is the most well-known estate in the series, as it also serves as a hospital and rehabilitation center for injured demon slayers.
Flame Estate (Rengoku Yashiki): The residence of the Rengoku family, home of Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame Pillar), his brother Senjuro, and his father Shinjuro.

Architecture and Structure of Estates
Towering roofs (Gassho-zukuri or thatched): In regions with abundant snow, such as Shirakawa-go, the roofs are extremely steep and covered with thick thatch (kayabuki) to support the weight of the snow and drain the water. Their shape resembles two hands joined in prayer.
Nail-free wooden structures: These were built by assembling heavy wooden beams using traditional carpentry techniques (tongue and groove), which gave them exceptional flexibility against earthquakes.
Absence of fixed walls: The outer perimeter usually has wide eaves (engawa) that protect the house from rain and sun, serving as a corridor or transition terrace between the interior and the garden.
The Interior of a Traditional Farmhouse
The Doma (Earth Floor): Just inside, there is an area with a floor of compacted earth or stone where agricultural work was carried out, cooking was done in large stoves (kamado) and tools or animals were kept.
The Irori (Central Hearth): It is the heart of the farm. An open hearth sunken into the wooden floor where a fire was lit to heat the house, smoke the roof (which protected the wood and straw from insects), cook, and bring the family together.
Tatami Floors and Shoji Panels: The main rooms are raised above ground level and covered with tatami mats. The spaces are modular; using sliding paper (shoji) or wooden (fusuma) panels, a single large room can be divided into several as needed.

Tanjiro Kamado
Empathetic and compassionate: He is extremely kind, to the point of feeling pity and even praying for the demons he defeats, understanding their past suffering.
Resolute and hardworking: His determination is unwavering; he never gives up in the face of adversity and trains tirelessly to protect others.
Honest and direct: He has impeccable morals, is very sincere, and finds it difficult to hide what he feels or to lie.
Nezuko Kamado
Protective and loyal: She retains her humanity after becoming a demon, always prioritizing the safety of her brother Tanjiro and any innocent human.
Affectionate and docile: In her usual state (and with the bamboo in her mouth) she is childlike, calm and expresses her affection through tender gestures.
Fierce in combat: When she enters battle to defend her own, she brings out a ruthless, impulsive and extremely aggressive side against enemy demons.

Zenitsu Agatsuma: He has short blond hair dyed with orange tips (originally black), golden eyes, and thick eyebrows. He wears the dark Demon Slayer uniform under a distinctive yellow haori with an orange gradient and a white triangle pattern.
Inosuke Hashibira: He is distinguished by wearing a gray boar's head mask with blue eyes. Without the mask, he reveals a very attractive androgynous face with bluish-black hair tipped with blue and green eyes. He wears no shirt, showing off his muscular torso, along with dark hakama pants held in place by a bearskin sash.

Tanjiro Kamado
Hair and eyes: Dark hair styled back with burgundy red tips and eyes of the same color.
Distinguishing mark: He bears a scar (which later transforms into the Mark of the Demon Hunter) on the left side of his forehead.
Attire: Wears a haori with a green and black checkered pattern (ichimatsu) over the official black Demon Slayer uniform.
Accessories: She stands out for her traditional hanafuda earrings and the cedar wood box she carries on her back to transport Nezuko.
Nezuko Kamado
Hair and eyes: Long, wavy black hair that turns bright orange at the tips, and light pink eyes.
Demonic traits: He wears a bamboo muzzle held in place by a red cord to prevent him from biting humans. He possesses sharp fangs, long claw-like nails, and the ability to change his body size (being able to shrink down to fit inside Tanjiro's box).
Clothing: She wears a pink kimono with a hemp leaf pattern (asanoha), a red and white checkered belt (obi), and a dark brown haori over it.

The Kamado family: They were the two older brothers of a large family (along with four younger brothers: Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru and Rokuta) who lived in an isolated cabin in the mountains during the Taisho era in Japan.
Their roles: After the death of his father (Tanjuro), a sickly but wise man who bequeathed to Tanjiro the traditional dance Hinokami Kagura and his hanafuda earrings, Tanjiro assumed the responsibility of supporting them by selling charcoal in the nearest town. Nezuko, the older sister, helped their mother (Kie) by taking care of her younger siblings.
An unbreakable bond: Although they were very poor, they lived in deep harmony, both characterized by their generosity and sense of duty towards others.
The night of the tragedy
The attack: One winter day, Tanjiro went down to the village to sell charcoal. Upon returning the next day, he discovered that Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor demon, had brutally massacred his entire family.
The transformation: The only survivor was Nezuko, but contact with Muzan's blood transformed her into a demon.
The origin of the journey
Despite transforming into a monster driven by instinct, Nezuko demonstrated extraordinary self-control by protecting Tanjiro instead of devouring him. This sisterly bond convinced the Demon Slayer Giyu Tomioka not to kill her, motivating Tanjiro to train to become a Demon Slayer himself, avenge his family, and find a cure to restore his sister's humanity.

Inosuke Hashibira: Raised by wild boars
The maternal tragedy: His mother, Kotoha, fled an abusive home when Inosuke was a baby and found refuge in the cult of Doma (the Upper Moon Two). Upon discovering that Doma was a demon who devoured his followers, she attempted to escape and threw Inosuke into a river to save him before being killed.
Wild upbringing: Inosuke survived by being rescued and raised by a family of wild boars in the mountains, adopting the mask of the boar who cared for him as his mother.
How he learned to speak: An old man who lived near the mountain read him poetry and fed him, teaching him to speak the human language (although he distorted his own name because of his lack of formal education).
Entry into the Hunters: He joined the Demon Hunters after defeating one on his mountain, taking his nichirin sword and learning about the Final Selection.

Zenitsu Agatsuma: The outcast driven by force
Lonely childhood: Orphaned at a young age, he grew up without anyone who believed in him or taught him a trade.
Scammed by love: He was deceived by a girl he fell in love with, leaving him with an exorbitant debt.
The training: Jigoro Kuwajima (the former Lightning Pillar) repaid his debt and took him on as his disciple. Despite Zenitsu's constant attempts to run away out of cowardice, Jigoro never gave up on him.
The lightning: During one of his escape attempts, Zenitsu climbed a tree and was struck by real lightning, which changed the color of his hair from black to bright blonde.
A single technique: Due to his lack of confidence, he only managed to master the First Form of Lightning Breathing (Thunder Flash), but he perfected it to an absolute level

Giyu Tomioka: His older sister, Tsutako, died at the hands of a demon while protecting him, leaving him tormented by guilt. After becoming a demon slayer in the final selection, his best friend Sabito died protecting everyone, including Tomioka, further traumatizing him.

Muichiro Tokito: His life alongside his twin brother was tragic; both were orphaned, and a demon killed his brother, an event that deeply affected him, especially considering they were descendants of the strongest demon slayers. (The twins Tsugikuni Yorichi and Michikatsu Solar/Lunar)

Gyomei Himejima: He was blind from birth and, in his youth, a demon killed several orphaned children he was caring for. Although he managed to save one girl, he was imprisoned for the incident, until his master rescued him and made him a Pillar.

Shinobu and Kanae Kocho: Their parents were killed by a demon, with Kanae, the older sister, and Shinobu surviving. Driven by revenge, Kanae became a Flower Pillar, but was later killed by Upper Moon Two Douma. Shinobu was filled with rage at seeing her sister die in her arms, and shortly after Kanae's death, Shinobu became a Demon Slayer. Now she acts like her sister Kanae: delicate, cheerful, and driven, though she's almost always angry.

Sanemi Shinazugawa: The death of his family, especially his mother who became a demon, left him with deep trauma and profound guilt. He had to kill her, and his brother called him a murderer, leaving them both orphans, going from a large family to just two children.

Obanai Iguro (Serpent Pillar)
Character: Obanai is a strict, ruthless, and stern person, with a deep contempt for demons and those he considers weak. His resentment and self-loathing stem from a traumatic past. He is ruthless with his comrades when they make mistakes, but deep down, he suffers from his loneliness and his unrequited love for Mitsuri.

Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Pillar)
Character: Sanemi is aggressive, impulsive, and short-tempered. He is a whirlwind of hostility, displaying a deep and visceral hatred for demons, to the point of being violent toward them and anyone who gets in his way. Despite his abrasive attitude, his anger is actually a mechanism to protect those he cares about.

Muichiro Tokito (Pillar of Mist)
Character: Muichiro is a clueless, indifferent, and seemingly emotionless character. He often seems lost in thought and doesn't easily remember things, which can give the impression that he is cold. However, his apparent apathy is the result of past trauma, and once he regains his memories, he displays a fierce will and underlying compassion.

Gyomei Himejima (Rock Pillar)
Character: Gyomei is a tall, gentle, and very emotional man. He is often seen weeping for the world's sorrows, with great compassion for the victims of demons. Despite his sensitive nature, he is considered the strongest Hashira, and his piety and serenity are a reflection of his religious devotion and inner strength.

Shinobu Kochō (Insect): She is a slender figure with a delicate appearance, a slim build, and fair skin, with beautiful purple eyes. She wears a white haori with a butterfly pattern in pink and light green, and is also characterized by a butterfly print. (The haori belonged to her deceased sister, Kanae.)

Obanai Iguro (Snake): He wears bandages covering the lower half of his face, has heterochromatic eyes (one yellow and one blue), and a medium-sized male build with toned muscles. He has slightly longer black hair, just below his shoulders, and fair skin. He also carries a snake on his shoulder that communicates with him.

Mitsuri Kanroji (Love): She has long pink hair with green tips and an impressive physique. She has a very flexible and muscular body with fair skin and eyes the same color as her hair.

Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind): His body is completely covered in battle scars, giving him a brutal and aggressive appearance. He also has white hair, purple eyes close to gray, and a muscular build that makes him look even more rugged.

Tengen Uzui (Sound): He is known for his flamboyant appearance, wearing flashy outfits, headdresses, and makeup, in addition to having a beautiful appearance that attracts women, a muscular build, and striking eyes.
