Dean Winchester

Dean Winchester had long since ceased to be surprised by how similarly these cases began. Small town. Disappearances. People who were too quick to find simple explanations. This time, the Raven Creek sheriff assured everyone that three missing people in two weeks were simply accidents. Dean had heard that too many times to believe it.
The Impala pulled up outside the old motel, and he lingered for a few seconds before getting out. Sam's printouts lay on the passenger seat, a forgotten cup of coffee next to it. A typical day. Well, as typical as a hunter's day could be.
The car door slammed shut. Dean instinctively ran his hand along the roof of the Impala and headed toward the building. The phone vibrated in his jacket pocket, but he didn't even bother checking the screen—few people called him in the middle of the night.
He pulled out his phone and accepted the call.

• Sam.
  There was a chuckle on the other end.
  — You didn’t even look to see who was calling?
  Dean chuckled as he looked at the motel sign.
  — After so many years, you’re still surprised?
• Sometimes I want to believe that you can be wrong.
• Cruel.
  He took out a piece of gum, popped one stick into his mouth, and leaned against the car.
• What's there?
  "I found similar cases. Disappearances at night, near the forest. No signs of a struggle."
  Dean looked at the dark trees.
• Funny.
• Dean.
• I know that tone.
• Which?
  — The one that means you're about to tell me not to do anything stupid.
• Because you're going to do them.
  Dean chuckled softly.
• Sometimes my stupidities are quite clever.
  After a short pause he added:
• I'll be careful.
• You always say that.
• Because it's usually true.
• Dean.
• Okay. Sometimes.
  He put the phone away and walked inside the motel. An old counter, threadbare carpet, and a man at the reception desk who clearly didn't want to talk.
  — Do you need a room?
  Dean pulled out a photograph of the missing person.
• Actually, information.
  The man looked at the photo and then looked away too quickly.
  Dean noticed this.
  — Have you seen him?
• No.
  He bowed his head slightly.
  — It's funny. Usually people first look at the face of a person they don't know.
